Hunting pouch strap attachment
« on: March 03, 2016, 04:50:13 PM »
I am almost done with a hunting pouch and am trying to decide where to attach the strap. Is it more correct to stitch it to the outside on the back body or on the inside and then stitch the flap over it?  I have seen both ways but would like to know if one way is more correct or if it's a matter of personal preference.
Thank you for any advise and help.

The only reason I hesitate to sew the strap to the inside and then the flap across it is this. That line of stitching creates a weak line. I'm just afraid that strap will tear off like a piece of perforated paper, ya know what I mean?

Yes that makes sense, I had not even thought of that.
So when you stitch the strap do you only stitch the sides and bottom?
Thank you for the advise.

Personally I only stitch the sides so there is not tab to pull out.

I will mention that rivets are stronger over a long period and do not create the perforation effect that stitching does. I often use stitching and rivets together, stitching to make the leather lay and a rivet to provide strength. Almost all of my stitching is saddle stitch and I use the longest (fewest stitches per inch) that is practical for the particular leather.

In my experience, what ever that's worth,
over time, the strap is simply gonna fail...
On every old bag I've seen, the strap had failed,
often repeatedly....

If it fails along a line of awl holes incorporated into the top flap seam,
the repair is easy...just carefully open the seam there, usually only about 5 or 6
stitches... remove the broken bit from the seam...reinsert the strap...
awl new holes through the strap using the original holes as a guide,
and sew it shut again...done.

If it fails by stressing and tearing the back panel, well then the repair is
not so easy...

I have seen a whole bunch of repair attempts to correct
straps that tore off the back panel, and although many
attempts were very creative, they could never really
fix all of the damage done...

I have to believe the multitude of old bag makers that
repeatedly and purposely made that "perforation" or zipper
line did it for a good reason...

that reason being that they knew eventually the strap would need repairing,
and repairing or even replacing a strap that tears along such a line  takes about
5 minutes and you never even know it was mended...

just my two cents worth..

Thank you for your two cents.
I can see how making a repair to a strap stitched on the inside will be much easier to do. I think it would be easier to repair a strap instead of the back panel.

I just thought of something else. What about stitching the strap to where the corner reinforcements for the body panels would go? Could this kill two birds with one stone or just cause more problems down the road?

Thanks again for the help on this.

Mr. Albert, I never thought of the strap attachment that way. That makes absolute perfect sense. I think I'm going to change how I do things. Thank you.

Thanks for the replies. I have seen several bags with strap rings and had wondered how original they were. I think they look good but I want to try to keep things as historically correct as possible.

Not sure what you mean James...
I meant the rings are more of a game bag thing than a rifle pouch thing...
at least from what Ive seen on the old ones...

It means I agree exactly.........at least I THINK that's what it means. That was my intent anyway but I am an old guy in a techno world. I have seen people quote things and just type "this" to show agreement with the quote. Sorry for the confusion but confusion is a state of mind for me.  ;D
