When Friends Get together on a Sunday
« on: March 23, 2009, 03:09:15 AM »
Well, here we are again- in the snow, but the level is dropping with the exceptionally warm weather- up over freezing every day for almost a week.  We're standing on a trail of packed snow that we've kept packed all winter.  We even extended our trail to include 4 more targets - a grueling 50 yards of crotch deep snow- good thing it was packing enough to hold us up the last couple feet as we trudged on.  It took 3 of us old !@#$% working in relays to get that part done.

Below you see 6 of us, 8 finally showed - some had to sleep in, I guess. How could anyone sleep in on such a beautiful day? I apologise for the last picture, Roger, the devil made me do it. That is LB doing "the nasty" to his little .40.

In the top picture on the left, you see Clarence  a new shooter in our midst. He's an accomplished IPSC shooter - champion, actually, and now he's got the BP bug. The (Chambers') English Sporting Gun he's packing is one recently purchased from Track - an exceptional deal, complete with 2 barrels, a .54 rifled barrel and the smooth 24 gauge that's on it today.  Once he found how to hold it, he did very well indeed, even the 92 yard fox was not secure from being hit. This is the third muzzleloading gun Clarence has purchased in this, his first year of shooting. A friend of his, Brad, showed up later and borrowed Clarence's first gun, a short .50 cap gun on mixed heritage.

We all had a great time, shot for 4 hours, about 70 rounds worth, each - no one having to wipe their bores  at any time and no one having difficulty loading, either. About everyone here shooting rifles was using a ball .005" under, except Taylor, who was using up some .490's in his .50 Virginia rifle. They certainly didn't hurt his accuracy, but as usual, when crowing "I haven't missed a target yet, he missed the next one. We both finished up with having to take 2- re-entries for missed targets.  Now I'm going to crow - second Sunday in a row, 3 cards with 3 shots. Yehawwwwww!

OOPS, my face is red because I was using a really small ball in the Musketoon this time - not a .575" ball in it's .574" bore, but a Lee mould .562" that casts .564" pure lead balls at 270gr., so I was using a ball .010" under, just like my Bro, and just like him  was using a .022" patch.  The rifling at the muzzle of my rifle is only .003" deep and it loads easily with it's polished and radiused crown.  Shoots fairly well, too.  Taylor says I'm on the slippery slope towards the 'dark side'(caps). Tomorrow, I'll shoot with Hatchet Jack and use one of the flinters - probably the .40 Squirrel rifle - new trigger, pivoted high - whould be great.

We're keeping the reigns pretty tight on Clarence and Brad. Neither of them can think of a reason to ever put their mouths over the muzzle.   Both are easily loading combinations that do not 'grow' fouling.

Roger, LB did that on purpose just to get your goat.  He laughed like crazy (easy thing for him) after the picture was taken.

In all honesty I thought you were talking about the guy in the red that might have been swabbing out the bore,,, then I saw LB and the barrel...  I can't talk, I do it to...

  Sorry Rog,
Daryls said that he'd post these pictures on the forum, so I said,"Here's one for Roger." Didn't think he'd really post it. All in jest,my son,all in jest!
Twas a fine day of shooting, camaraderie, good friends. Oh,needed to add, really great to see Len McCrae come out after getting his eyes fixed. He has one of the nicest Lancasters I've seen and handled. Holds sweet!...the gun, that is!

OK- top picture, just so's y'll know.

Clarence - Hatchet Jack - Taylor - me - LB - Len

Bottom picture has Crispy on the left with his 28 bore.  Hatchet Jack wasn't swabbing, just loading. No one here swabs - we've had swabs show up, but none do that nasty to their barrels.

Hatchet Jack and I shot the trail again yesterday - some 80+ shots each. We tend to look through the bush and if we can see another gong through the trees and branches, we shoot.  Had a good time - beautiful sunny day way up around 38degrees(F). We extended the trail to open up another 4 targets.  Split my card again using the .40 squirrel rifle.  Hatchet Jack was shooting his .50 cal studded Hawken - she's a good rifle - might have killed some bears, I don't know. His card had a lead smear 1/2 way across, then cut out the other 1/2.  He usually gets this one with his 20 bore.

Guess I have to clean that rifle, some time today. ;D

I figured once I looked at that picture, the only thing I could see was Hatchet Jack with that rod down his barrel.  I thought, wow,,, you guys are going to be relentless on him if he's swabbing... ;D

Finally I noticed LB and his rifle,,, so I figured Hatchet Jack was just loading... ;D

Ok, I'm a bit slow... ;)

NoProblemmo - we're all there with you.  None of the guys we shoot with ever swab the bore - seems to us that someone who wasn't social might do that to occupy their time between shots - we're always talking, ribbing, telling stories and messing with each other's minds. That way, we get used to the continual racket and jibbing and learn to concentrate through it all.   Heck, there's no time for swabbing - more important things to do.

Well, here we are again, 29th March- snow levels seem to be dropping a bit. Nice and warm today - beautiful sunshing at 38F.  Only 5 shooters showed - too bad. We shot for 4 1/2 hours - some of us up to 65 shots from all angles through the bush - missed my card today- twice!  :o  We;;, not really shocked - it happens.  Had a hooked card  ::) and burned the exact centre out of it, just a 'graze'.  Hatchet Jack got his first card with the first shot and LB on his re-entry. Clarence cut his first one cleanly with his 24 bore English gun. Only the second day out with it, and his smoothbore shooting is starting to 'shine'.  I tried one of LB's .013" patches and pushed it flush with just my thumb - probably why I missed my card first shot, then with a proper patch for the second missed because I was blowing out all the 'extra' fouling - HA! - just kidding about the excuses - close enough for a smoothbore, should be close enough for about any load.  Tried finishing off with some squib loads- probably no more than 15gr.- just a light pow - tink - on the rabbit twice at 30 yards - who needs more powder - heh, heh, heh. I've shot matches where with certain targets, you had to load with the supplied measure - about 15 grs. That adds a bit of mystery to hitting close targets, inside 50 yards. Lots of fun with a Brown Bess :).

Good day - chowed down along with coffee at the restaurant on the way home.  Brad walked in, as he was shooting his new Rigby on the upper range today.  Maybe get him down on the trail next weekend.

LB, Clarence, Daryl, Crispy and Hatchet Jack.  We thought the "End of the Trail" sign made a good 'back-drop for today's shooting.  Of course, we walked out, stopping to fire another 7 to 10 shots at various targets along the route. Great day with a good bunch of 'right-minded' people. The sign points towards town. Bit of a jaunt through the snow though - still crotch deep in the bush.

   Daryls,
I measured again,Daryls, it's not thirteen thou, it's  dead on .020 thou. Dial calipers,Mitutoyo machinists. Took several measurements, same. He keeps teasing me how thin my patches are,LOL. This is not a loose combo as the long gongs can attest. Barrel cleaned great,BTW. Daryls was playing too hard and barked his pinky, nice piece of hide slashed away. Keep away from my thin patches, they'll hurt ya! Doancha just hate it when you pull that rammer too far out and slam your fingers into the muzzle! hehehe... binderdundat

Yeah - almost a day later and still bleeding. :'( It was nasty - oh well - that patch or hide needed replacing anyway - it's old.
Now, now - lets not fight - if you want someone to think you're using a heavy patch, that's OK :-*.
Since I thumb started your patch with a .396" ball in my .398" bore, I'm thinking your method of measurement may possibly leave a bit to be desired ::).  I'll give you the rest of that 6oz denim if you want - same as what you're using.  When you want to try some 10oz. that I use which actually measures .020", I'll give you a couple strips.  The other manufacturer's 10 oz. I have runs .0215" - it's good too, and what I normally use ;D. I have some 8oz that runs .017".  It will be easier for you to load than the real .020" patch in that long coned barrel of yours.  :D

Maybe when it warms up some I'll switch but I can't complain about accuracy and loading with this ,LOL, 13 thou.
   Where's that "other" picture?
I put a hard squeeze on this patch material and the most I could squeeze it down with tons of pressure was .018.

That's fine NP. We'll get some bench work under us when it warms a bit and we can find the bench - it's out there in the snow somewhere.  During the week is OK for the upper pistol range if no ones there.  I'd rather not do any bench shooting when Brad's hammering away with is .416 Rigby next bench or someone with a muzzle-breaked Ultramag.
