Lehigh or Tenn.
« on: March 16, 2016, 12:18:22 AM »
I want to build a 32 with a 44" barrel. I was thinking about a Lehigh barn gun but, then thought about maybe a Tenn. I have a 36 and 40 in the Tenn. style and like them a lot. I would like some input on what style most of you would go with.  I'm open to any opinion.

If you are satisfied with your TN's then try something different.

If not, then get on with your best TN ever.

Since you seem to have an liking for southern guns, if I were you I would build nice a Gillespie gun from N.C.  I have an "A" weight .40 Gillespie that I love.  A bit fancier than a TN but still packs a lot of southern charm.  My 2 cents worth.

Being first a hunter, I tend to prefer the clean lines and looks of the barn guns, southern guns, and plains rifles over the real ornate rifles. That's a nice rifle Dave.

There is no reason at all that a hunting gun has to be plain. The nice ones shoot just fine. ;)

Thanks for all the input, David your Gillespie is a beautiful piece of work, one to be proud of.  I have been doing a lot of thinking and I think I'm going to try a Lehigh or Bucks barn gun. I think a slim little 32 would work just fine.

That's a tough question. Both are excellent choices.I would have to go with a southern mountain ash or cherry stocked.

Ash can be really pretty but its too heavy for me. Walnut and cherry a lighter better handling gun in my opinion.

Curious if anyone has built a southern rifle with a butternut stock? I have heard the Gillespie's built a few out of "white walnut" which I understand was butternut. I would love to see one but never have.

I've built a large display cabinet out of butternut. Pretty wood but tends to slinter off easy and as you say it is softer than walnut.  It's in the walnut family and sands, files, etc much like walnut.
