Custom Breechplug

Can anyone direct me to someone who makes custom patent flint breech plugs? I want to put a rifled barrel on my Pedersoli Mortimer 12 ga. I know McCandless has retired.

Ed Rayl does but better call and make sure his timeframe is ok, he stays behind.
W.E. Rayl, Box 91, Gassaway, W.V. 26624 . Ph 304-364-8269

Bobby Hoyt may also make them but I am not sure.Bob Hoyt 717 642 6696

There are several members here that can make them but they may not have time or the desire. You might hear from one of them.

As I remember that is a hooked breach. I once made a hooked breachplug for a CVE hawken replacement barrel out of a spare breech plug I had  from a Hopkins and allen underhammer. That plug has just a big round head as manufactured and I filed it to match the proper shape. This assumes that you have US threads  on your barrel. I have extras I would send to you.

That Pedersoli breech will probably have a metric thread so it may not be easy to find anyone who wants to make one for that barrel.

I recommend Kerry Stottlemyer http://www.klstottlemyer.com/. He made breech-and-tang for two of my .72-caliber barrels. The process was to mirror image an Allen English-style 1.25-inch breech-and-tang from 2.25-inch round stock I furnished.

He has a slide show of that job. But the last time I checked, that web page was under reorganization. Nevertheless, he did excellent work.

Hope this helps.

Could you get a local machinist or even a trade school to turn down a section and thread a piece of 8620 RB ? Have him run a drill/round end mill into it for the powder chamber? You could hacksaw and file from that point. There are some 1.0 and 1.50   6inch long hunks of 8620 RB on the Canadian ebay site now for a few bucks each. Should not be too hard to find someone with a lathe that can cut metric threads if that is what you need.

Seems to me the Mortimer has a very high comb, high heal and might not be suitable for a rifled barrel, even with high sights.  A local chap has one and it's a cheek cracker, but he shoots it well.

That is a time consuming job. I ruffed one in for my dear friend several years ago & had about 14 hours in it & he had probably that long as well finishing it.

Pedersoli makes the Mortimer in 12ga smoothbore or .54 rifled. The barrels interchange. My other option is to get the barrel from them, but, The barrel is too long for a half stock in my opinion and shortening it creates issues with the thimble
spacing. I also want a .58 cal. Also I have concerns about the touch hole on the new barrel correctly lining up with the pan.
