Silver tipped entry thimble and pipes....the easy way
« on: March 29, 2016, 10:20:10 PM »
Without hijacking David's thread, here is the easy way to tip them with German silver for those who don't have lathes.

Get a set of iron thimbles in the size you desire for your rifle.  In the case above, I used 5/16's ones.  Buy a set of sacrificial thimbles in GS the next larger size.  In this case, I used 3/8ths ones.  For 3/8ths pipes, get a set of 7/16ths in GS.  Cut the tabs off at the gap.  Slice them to the desired width.  Tin the ends of the iron pipes and slide the silver ones in place.  You may have to spread them slightly, but keep them as tight as possible.  Dribble a bit of liquid flux into the joint.  Then hit the GS with a bit of heat and add solder as needed.

Just goes to show there are many was to skin the cat.  I appreciate seeing how other people do the same task.  It really gets me thinking about other ways to end up with the same results.
Now not to hi-jack you back, but I am putting together another photo session, like I don't have anything better to do, on an easier way than my original post that does not require a lathe.  It will be more workman like as it will use less silver, a file or two and a hack saw along with a little soldering and still maintain strength.

I also added the words "the hard way" to my thread.  :D
