I have the other horn from this cow it was Scottish Highland and I'll be beginning soon on that to go with a gun I'm building for customer at the moment. The plug and Butt I made from apple wood. I'm going to put a small silver band on the spout so it will never split out.

What do you think???

A very fine, functional work of art! I like the contrast between the white color of the large end of the horn and the creamy yellow towards the spout. Having done some turnings in the past, I would like to know where you get apple wood? Is it something that you have to cut and mill yourself or can it be bought? The only apple wood I've seen down here is either chips or chunks for the smoker/BBQ pit.

I really like the color of these two horns also... wish I had a bunch more! It's not so hard to find apple wood for small project like this.... if you need some let me know. I'm always on the lookout for good wood. I've logged for 30+ years and have had a sawmill for 20 so yes I mill it myself if necessary. Most apple though for small projects like this you can just cut a chunk out and split in half to put up and dry. Any fruit tree is a very desirable wood even crab apple which is fairly common for ornamental purposes. Some of the best apple you can find on old farmsteads where they have not been pruned. They get large then and can have some larger pieces. What do you turn exactly? it may be hard to find a piece of apple that doesn't have the heart in it to turn a good piece... but I have lots of burls and some really great ones if you are interested I could send you pictures.

Awesome job.I really like the color of the neck of the horn.Its kinda hard to find good horns to work with.That horn has a nice shape to it.

I agree with Tim. Your finish work is outstanding. It takes a lot of time to get out all the file marks and you have done a fantastic job! Honestly I'd like it better if the throat and spout were dyed. I used to really like the natural "latte" color, but now much prefer the dark counterpoint to the white body. Are you planning to dye the body?

Well, mostly it was just a driven engraving tool... the same as what I use for most engraving on metal. It seems like you can control the cuts so much better that way and make them thicker and thinner as if your doing engraving on metal. That way you can get the bold cuts and thin where you want them. The fine work I just cut in with any available sharp object mostly this skew chisel I have. It's a J.B Addis very good old steel chisel.

ok I was wondering how you got the big bold lines. When I do scrimshaw the lines always come out thin. I use a tool I made that has a triangular cross section but has a sharp point.

Reads like he is doing more in the line of Engraving/Engrailing, than Scrmshaw. I've done both and they are different in the overall look . Nice horn ,well done.

I like the look of the using the professional engraving tool- the lines are reminiscent of the James Grant campaign horns in my opinion.
Your file work is very exacting and pleasing. The proportions and butt are wonderful. One thing I did pick up is the omission of the word QUI or QVI in the garter. I have seen the Y absent on a few original horns, but not the QUI.
I would like to see more horn work from you posted. Thanks.

Very generous of you but I haven't had access to a lathe in many years. When I did I liked to make smaller bowls, chalice and vases using cherry, mahogany and cypress which despite being a softwood finishes to a golden color. The larger pieces like for a lamp I used maple, walnut and paduke. I did manage to turn a few pieces of oak, for a half size baseball bat and one old fencepost into a police baton.

One nitpicking question: If the design represents the Order of the Garter, isn't the phrase supposed to be: Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense? Granted, my French is just good enough to get me slapped.

I wouldn't worry about the word missing a bit., as we can look at many original powder horns with words , letters missing and some horrible miss-spilled words. I always thing that it adds character.
