Where to buy brass ramrods?
« on: April 21, 2016, 04:43:52 PM »
Saw the hickory ramrod post and it reminded me that I need to get my daughter a brass ramrod for her little .32 rifle. Where is the best place to get a nice brass ramrod?

Spotted Bull,

I have one from RMC and it has been a good rod, came with a muzzle guide.

Go to K&S Hobbies online and look through their brass tube list. They sell 12" & 36" thin wall tubing in different diameters. If you need more length then 36" you can join a 36" and a 12" length together by buying a 12" length of the next size smaller tube and cut a 2" or 3" piece and solder it into the two longer sections to join the two together. You will be surprised at how strong thin wall tubing is. I purchased a 3/8" X 36" 0.014 walled tube for $9.96 from my local hobby store a few weeks ago. You will need to solder on end caps and if you think you want more rigidity then drill & tap one end for a 10 X 32 TPI so that you can screw a jag in and drill the other end for a vent (1/16" hole) and inject some foam insulation into the tube. This will give you all the  rigidity you will ever need.

UPDATE TO THE ABOVE PARAGRAPH;

I just made up two 304 S.S. range rods from tubing I purchased from <http://www.onlinemetals.com/> they also have brass and other metals any length you want. Their prices are good and I have found them great to deal with. I found that the .028" wall 304 S.S. had a tendency to flex and deform if held high on the rod and stroked hard at an angle so I would either squirt in insulating foam or get the .032" wall thickness tubing for added rigidity. Here is the range rod with other stuff I assembled for a customer. Not a great picture but ----- it's a picture anyway ;D

Yep, RMC does make a good product.
When I owned October Country, we made range rods and also undergun rods out of solid brass and also tubular.  Not sure if the new owner is carrying that product line on or not.
We used a heavier wall tubing for our rods than the hobby shops usually stock.  You might want to check with a metal supplier in your area for what you want.

I use onlinemetals.com for most of my needs. Aluminum and brass mostly. Priced by the foot, fast service.

I'm actually looking for one that's already a ramrod. I'm a leather worker. Not that handy with working metal.

The completed brass rods are out there but pricey -- do a Google Search -- sorry but this is the best answer I can come up with for now ::)

Randy is no longer running T V Manufactoring. Jack Garner has come out of retirement and is now running his company again. Give him a call if you need anything. You will again get prompt service......Bob

Years ago, I went to a machine shop and had one made for my Crockett.  Had both ends tapped for cleaning jags, and one end rounded out for ramming the ball.  Don't remember what I paid, but I can't think it was too much.

I still have a couple of those solid rods you sold Big Smoke.  Super quality.  Tough as nails.  Somebody will still be using them long after I'm gone.
