Hanger sword, scabbard, and baldric
« on: April 23, 2016, 04:27:08 PM »
This was my first attempt at making a center seam scabbard and baldric for a hanger sword. My friend made the sword, also his first. We're both rank amateurs at our chosen crafts and did our best working mostly from pictures in books and whatever contemporary or historical examples we could get our eyes on. Many thanks to Wick Ellerbe who most generously illustrated the process by which a center seam scabbard is made, I couldn't have wrapped my head around that without his help.  Another set is in the works which I hope will capitalize on the mistakes made and lessons learned making this one.  Thanks!

That's a really cool setup. The scabbard, the baldric, and the sword look great. It's hard to believe they're all first attempts. Nice work by both you and your friend.

Looks very good - a lot of work went into the total project which is obvious from the outcome of the set ;).

I have a question and since I am not familiar with how the scabbard is inserted into the baldric can you elaborate on it? I can see that the "button" on the scabbard is holding the scabbard into the baldric but does the "button" swivel from horizontal to vertical position to allow the scabbard to enter and lock into the baldric?

The button doesn't swivel...the whole thing just sorta fits together. This one is a little tight fitting, the next one I will make the sleeve of the baldric somewhat looser.

Pretty darn good for first attempts. Think how good the fifth one will be.
