Hello everyone, I have not posted anything in a while. This semester has kept me busy at my real job. I do have a project I am working on. It is a Club butt fowler based on one from the book All Sorts of Provincials. It is not an exact copy. It will be pretty plain. The original did not have a butt plate, so I do not think I will include that. It is a 12 gauge barrel and was my first Octagon to round barrel to inlet.

It is still in the rough shaping stage.

How much drop at the heel and comb did you decide to use?

It is just under three inches to the comb. Right now it is just over 8 at the heel. I made the profile based on the original.

I like that a lot. The more I look at old guns, the more I really like the really early ones. These old club butt fowlers are cool, keep posting your progress. I'd like to see that one when it's done.

I'd like to build a gun based on the Rifle Shoppe's Newtowne Musket someday but can't seem to string together enough conversations with anyone at the Rifle Shoppe to see if any castings or parts from that gun are available.

Looks like a super hard piece of plain maple I once had. How challenging is it to shape a club butt from pictures? I'm assuming you haven't handled many. I certainly haven't.

Unfortunately I have not handled any. The book I am going by has pictures of every angle, except the butt. So far it has not been too tricky. I have not been able to use my planes for spokeshave, so every is being done with a rasp and I used gouges to rough out the shapes.

It may get trickier as I go. Having not handled one myself, I pick it up and aim it fairly often in the process.

I don't really know one way or the other if it's a fake, the Smithsonian seems to value theirs. I just think it's a cool looking matchlock. Shockingly enough, I'm not familiar with Leonard Day either, so my opinion probably doesn't much matter.

In any event, I really like Coryjoe's club butt fowler.

Your Club Butt is coming along nicely. "Of Sorts for Provincials has some very good examples of early guns. I think you would find "Flintlock Fowlers" by Tom Grinslade would be a big help to you, it's my go to book for these type of guns. Looking forward to see how you progress but looking good so far.

Yeah I have that book too and you are right. Lots of great examples in there. I appreciate everyone's comments and interest in my project. I will keep you posted as I go.

Ok, everyone. I have done a bit more shaping. I have the trigger in, but not pinned in. I have been working on the shaping and it looks good, but a little weird, but it matches the original. As you can see the comb tapers drastically into the wrist, almost making a triangle, as is on the original. If anyone has any suggestions or advice just let me know. As bulky as it looks it does feel good.

Looks good to me.
Only thing I see is the angle of the butt(plate). It looks like it has too much pitch to my eyes. I thought it should be more perpendicular to the bore.

How does it feel when you shoulder it ? The one I built years ago the gun lines up as soon as shouldered.
I rounded the comb more after shooting it because it would bite my cheek .

Your lock panels are much wider in the front than the back. How did you accomplish that. That is, did you file the barrel smaller in the rear?

Optical illusion. They are a touch wider in the back in reality.
