Roller lock question
« on: May 09, 2016, 01:50:28 PM »
I was given this Roller lock to build a rifle around. I've never seen one like it before. I was just wondering what it was patterned after. What type of breech plug would you use with it?

That is called a "Bar in Wood" lock and is the type found on high quality percussion
target rifles like those made in New York and Mass. It can be adapted to a Hawken type breech plug.
The screws indicate a bridle on three posts and the sear on an axle like an English lock.
That hammer is one designed by Bill Large in 1972 and I had the mold for years. I gave it to Les
Barber who does a good bit of assembly for R.E.Davis. Les was here Friday and I now have 4 of these hammers
if I want to make locks with them.

Charles Slotterbeck built guns with this type of lock as well. One of his brothers, who marked his guns Slotter and Co.  also built a few with this system. These were all very late muzzleloaders, many made after the advent of cartridge guns.
