Source for waxed/unwaxed linen for period leather work
« on: May 13, 2016, 04:56:47 PM »
I read an article somewhere on hand sewing leather that suggested that the pre waxed 5 cord linen thread that one typically finds was inferior to the plain colored, unwaxed linen, as a rule. I bought some ( 1/4 lb spool) plain, unwaxed
from Zack White Leather. I find that it is wound somewhat in- consistently and if you try to wax it, it kind of bunches up in spots. What do you all use for a 5 cord linen and/or what tips would you have for me. I was using bow string wax, haven't got the beeswax/pitch mix made up yet.

Ebay. Type in Barbours Linen Thread. I also use book binding linen thread.

Yes, get Barbour's. No other compares. As for hand wax, google "coad" there are really good photo tutorials.  I started making and using this and it's made a wonderful improvement in my leather products. I make my Coad using Bee's wax and Jeffry Pine pitch. If you need some pine pitch let me know and I'll send you some.
