The first is a 12 ga Caywood english game gun with a 30 inch jug choked barrel.

This one is "Achilles" another 12 ga with a 32 inch colerain jug choked barrel that I built myself. I fell going down a steep grade hunting with Achilles this spring an broke the stock at the wrist. It was not designed for a fat redneck to fall on it. I took the barrel an lock an sent to Joe Schell an he is going to make it into a iron mounted southern smoothbore for me before next turkey season.

You can see my smoothbore in the hunting photos post. Bear, deer, and geese along with anything thing else I hunt. It is my most used firearm.

12 bore, 72" Rayl barrel. Not mine but I put it together for a friend.

James, you did nice work on that 72" fowler. I like the antique finish.

What was the theory behind the super long barrels back in the day? Were the shot over the gunwales of a boat at floating birds?

They were used for duck and swan guns. This one is a shoulder gun like many were. I would have loved to build a Dutch or English waterfowling piece around this one but my friend had already gotten Fred Miller to put in a pre-carve. I radically changed it as much as possible. My friend wanted a shotgun with a 6' barrel like he had read about in a 1850s hunting account.

24 ga. sighted smoothbore, circa 1994. Metal started out white or bright and has honest (not artificial) aging from years of use and carry. This is what your faked guns should look like. It has been from Indiana to Washington and parts in between. Been cleaned with cold coffee, swamp water, and used to pound tent stakes in. It's been elk and deer hunting, taken pheasants, and dusted a clay pigeon at 70 yards. Sharon barrel and flawless working L&R Jaeger lock. Competed against rifles in local matches for years and did well. Shoots as good today as it ever did.

This is not the most complimentary picture of this fine gun but here it is anyway.

This is a Chambers' Pennsyvania fowler 20 gauge. The drop at comb and heel is excellent for shot or ball, and it handles perfectly.

It is a piece of spalted maple from the tree that was in front of my shop when it burned. The barrel was in the shop when 3/4 of a gallon of reagent grade nitric acid vaporized in the heat.

Just a few, 6 foot buccaneer musket 75 cal. A couple boxlock blunderbusses, a Spanish "Ripoll" pistol, A large Sanish Blunderbuss, and a wheellock.
