A York Co. Horn

  Steve said "Now do York Co.", so here ya go. Just finished it up, would have been sooner but I did not have a tip long enough so I pieced two together, hard to tell where they meet.
 15" around the outside curve, 12 1/2 tip to tip. The Apple wood Butt is about 2 5/8", it is held in by 4 wooden pegs and is hollowed out about 3/4s its length. The tip and horn are threaded 5/8-11. Staples for the strap or straps. Color on horn is AF and brown shoe polish, tip was done with hot Oil based Brown shoe dye.

I love the color (the horn too) and wondered if you did anything different that just apply and heat it. I have a York Co. horn that was not stained/dyed so I tried to stain it with AF and really got very little color and figured I missed something somewhere.

It's too bad for you that I'm not wealthy. I'd probably try to buy every horn you make otherwise. Really nice work.

 I use a good heat gun set on High. Heat the horn until it is very hot but be careful or it will blister. Brush on the AF and let it sit for awhile, wash it off and see what you've got, sometimes it takes three or four coats to get what you want. Make sure the horn is clean, even oil from your fingers can leave spots. Once you have what you want heat it up, just warm, rub some Brown shoe polish on it and buff. As always make a trial run on a piece of scrap first.

York's are probably my favorite "factory" horns. Just seem right. So many different versions but all seem beautiful.   Very nicely done.

 With the screw tip removable,could/is it used as a powder measure,,multi tasking ????

 I wouldn't think it would work as a measure, first there is the hole with the plug in it, not very dependable and second it would be hard to measure the load, the threaded hole would have to be cut with the powder charge in mind.
 But...the tip could be used as a funnel to make filling the horn easier.
 Having said that, I have seen a horn that had a measure that was also used as the stopper.
