A Few New Knives

I had some extra time in the last few weeks and finished up a few projects that I had started back over the winter. Opinions and helpful critiques are always welcome. These blades vary and are of my own making and follow no real school of design. The small blades have been forged from Nicholson files and the larger from 1084; all have been halfted with mule deer antler pieces.

The first blade is my impression of a "rifleman's knife" (If there would have been such a thing). The bolster in this piece was forged from a piece of old muzzle-loading barrel and the guard from scrap 1084 that came from the tang.





These other two blades are very all purpose and would be great bag and patch knives and the smallest has a poured pewter bolster.

I used the leather dye on these, but that was because they were some really dry sheds and help the color well. On other pieces that are not well dried the dye will not penetrate and it just wipes right off. These took the best color penetration of any that I have done.

Very nice work. I have also found that the old, cracked, dried out bleached out antler will take color RIGHT FINE!

The pieces that I used were very dry, but did not have deep cracks. With a little light sanding and the application of dye and then a final coat of BLO the cracks swelled back up. I finished them off by burnishing with another piece of antler.

I have heard of other folks filling deep cracks with expoxy...others on here may have other ideas for filling deep cracks, but so far all my cracks swelled back with just light sanding and dye & oil combo.
