Dixons 2016
« on: June 01, 2016, 09:11:43 PM »
Is there any information about the upcoming Fair at Dixons, that would explain who was conducting seminars, classes, schedule, etc....
I checked their website and there doesn't seem to be any current news, except that their website is under construction.

 Thanks.

Bill

Here is a Draft ALR Tent schedule. ALR members are putting on short demonstrations throughout the weekend of the Fair, at the white tent up on the hill below the blacksmith shop. These demonstrations are in addition to various demonstrations and full schedule of seminars that Dixon's puts on. Vendors and artisans round out the weekend. This is total bliss for anyone interested in muzzleloading.

What the ALR offers is very direct person-to-person informal demonstrations of a process or concept. There is a give and take, questions and answers.

Thanks to all the ALR members who have taken the time to share their knowledge with others. Through education and sharing is how we will grow the muzzleloading community and hobby, and keep the future the longrifle alive.

See you at Dixon's!

Hi Folks,
Please do come and visit us at the ALR tent.  There are few people who know more about finishing 18th century guns than Mitch Yates.  Every frequent user of this forum knows that Ed Wenger can carve wood and do wire inlay at a standard equal to the very best work produced today.  John Cholin's scraper making alone is worth a visit and Acer is one of finest engravers and gun makers around.  Watching Tom Currie make a Buck's County rear thimble last year was amazing. Mark Elliot makes fabulous iron mounted rifles, and period attire and equipment.  He has a wealth of historical craft knowledge that he actually uses in his work.   I've not met Eric Ewing, but a visit to his blog (ewingscreekpouches.blogspot.com) will take your breath away.  I will repeat last year's demo, which shows how I rough shape the wrist and lock area with essentially 2 tools and I've added a casting demo where we will make some wrist escutcheons. Hope to see and meet many of you at Dixon's.

Yip,

I have difficulty walking due to a neurological condition and have been in a wheel chair before.   I have seen wheel chairs and scooters at Dixons, but there are steep inclines to navigate.   There are also threshholds, steps and tight spaces.  I don't think you will be able to get in the Barn in a wheel chair.   It is possible to get to some of the outdoor displays and seminar areas around the house and shop but you will be on grass or mud half the time and it can get congested.   This area is also criss-crossed with cables that you will have to roll over.  There is gravel for the lower level of display areas around the shop basement.  The area around the shop, garage and concessions is paved.   It would help to have someone with you to help with the hills.   They could maybe push you up the hill the long way around.

Also,  I have never see accessible rest room facilities.  They might be there, but I haven't seen them.   Perhaps a call to Dixon's shop might clarify this.

As I will have to climb a steep hill to get to the ALR tent,  I plan to pretty much get where I am going and stay there, getting around with a cane when I must.   I would like to take a rollator, but I think it might be too much in the way.   A lot will depend on if I can carry my tool box on my rollator.  Otherwise, I will use a small hand truck to carry around my tools and such.   I am going to have to give some thought to the matter.   I don't get around as well as I used to.

It would be great if any of the instructors/demonstrators who have any notes on their topics could post them or a link to them for all of us who would love to be at Dixon's but can not due to distance, medical conditions, or other conditions that prevent us from attending or ever getting up  there. I would love to go someday but it would be close to 1700 miles from my home in Louisiana and just not very practical as I get older. Thanks in advance and hope all that can attend will have great fun and learn a lot.
P.S. Ed, I would love to watch your carving as I always learn when I am around you and your fantastic work.

I'll be moving back to Southeastern PA the end of this month (Grandbabies there). I have not attended the builders fair since 1999. I'm guessing it is probably the same just much larger.

I always attended Demonstrations on Friday morning and I don't remember them being crowded. The Builders Fair is the only place I've ever had a whole pile of horns to choose from.

Maybe some people might volunteer to video the presentations and post them to Youtube for a link here.   I would be willing to do one, but only one.   I have enough other stuff to do that weekend.

I have driven to Dixon's from Missouri, and am considering a trip this year.  The worst part of the trip was construction along I-70, and the crazy speed limits on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Hi Folks,
I am going to bring my original 1760-1770s English fowler to Dixon's so that folks can examine and photograph it.  It is a chance to handle a classic English gun up close and see the fine details that characterize many 18th century English guns.

I think the hotels are all booked.   The best I could get in March was a smoking room at Microtel in Hamburg.

Looks like I will have to plan ahead next year for the event where hotels are concerned. Just have to get up a bit earlier and make the drive.

I booked today into a motel in Kutztown... not too far from the event.  If looking for a place to stay, check out the Kutztown area.

I echo Mark's comment about videoing the demonstrations. It would be wonderful if someone with video skills could set up and video the demonstrations and either produce it as a "for sale" video or a post on YouTube. Many of us will never be able to make it to Dixons for various reasons but would love to learn what these talented instructors have to demonstrate. Hope this catches someone's attention that will put a plan into action for this years great lineup of demonstrations.

Hey Boys,

There is a good brew pub on the main street in Kutztown.  Just a few miles from Dixons.

A good place to wet the whistle after a day on the lawns at the fair.

Last year there was a pretty good car show going on the main street on Saturday too.

See you all there.  Travel safe!
