Contacting Ed Rayl - barrel maker
« on: June 07, 2016, 10:20:57 PM »
I have 2 Rayl barrels(.40 X 34" X 5/8") that appear to be breached either with 1/2"X 16 or 1/2"X 18 thread. I can't tell for sure. I would like to contact Ed to ask him what he uses for barrels of that size. If someone knows and could tell me that would be great. I have these 2 for sale and would like to be able to tell a buyer what the breech is threaded with. Thanks.

Can't you go to the hardware store and see if they have a bolt that fits or to a mechanic shop who can measure the threads with a thread gauge.

1/2x16 or 18 would be hard to find.

US standards are 1/2"x13 coarse and 1/2"x20 fine.

Am I missing something?

I'd say the threads are 1/2x20,a common US standard fine thread. I have a 1/2x16 die
I use to make lead screws for a 6" lathe I make screws with.
Get a 1/2 x 20 bolt at a hardware store and seen what it does when tried in the hole.

5/8th would be less than 3/4 in which is rather unusual. Are you sure it's not 6/8 [ 3/4 ""]
which would have a standard 9/16 x 18 thread breach ?
Perhaps it was 3/4 and has been heavily draw filed.

Those would be very unusual size barrels & plug sizes. You SURE it is not 3/4" across the flats and  9/16" x 18 TPI for the breach plug  ????

Well that will teach me to have my reading glasses on the next time I measure something and to have it in good light. It is 3/4" across the flats and probably 9/16" X 18 thread.

Thanks for all the reply's and help. I called Ed's number a bunch of times and only got a busy signal. Probably a good thing because he would have wondered what kind of an idiot I'm I dealing with here.

I last spoke with him about six months ago when I ordered a barrel.  I know he is super busy, my barrel was 18 months out.

I did reach Mr. Rayl at the 8269 number and changed my mailing address as I moved after my four bypass surgery.
