Touch hole liner removal
« on: June 12, 2016, 06:37:11 PM »
I've waited a bit to long to replace the touch hole liner in my rifle. It doesn't want to budge. In considering my options I'm looking at the problem as though it were just another stuck bolt. Should I use a torch and put some heat on it? Carefully of coarse. Drill out touch hole and use an "easy out "? And I know this may sound like a stupid question to the more well informed, but just for my own edification, is there any such thing as a touch hole liner with a left hand thread? Maybe I'm trying to turn in the wrong direction. Since I don't know what the thread is I don't yet have a replacement. But I figure that will be the easy part once I get the old one out. Thanks for any thoughts on the matter. Mike

And as long as I'm on the subject is one type of liner better than another? Anything pertinent I should know about installing new liner?

Hi Mike,

I've never heard of a left-hand threaded liner and I cannot image why one would be needed.  Righty tighty, lefty loosey.

If you have or can borrow a reversible drill, get a left handed drill bit and drill the liner for a Easy-out.  You might get lucky and the drill will back the liner out.  If not apply heat and use the Easy-out.

I've actually drilled out broken bolts using successively larger number bits until only the threads were left in the hole and could be pulled out as a long wire.  Good luck.

Thanks Ron. We're on the same page. As far as which brand to replace it with I've seen sever kinds. Some with cone shaped "holes on the inside, some good plated, etc. I'm not looking for some gimmick, just a good reliable liner. I though you were in Indianna.

By drilling out old liner with progressively larger bits I will destroy the old liner I was hoping to have in hand to know what size I need to order. Just to keep it simple. But if worse comes to worse.

I just installed a Chamber's liner this morning.  If you follow their directions, they go in like a dream and look really great.

Try some PB blaster or.other penetrating oil??  Outside and is plug the touch hole with a toothpick and squirt a bunch down the bore...

The flat screw driver slots are a bugger...might need to drill it out...

If you have the room on the flat I'd drill it for a Chamber's White Lightnin.  I did a 15/16" barrel to 5/16" liner and it fit...

Installation is easy...

I am going to behold shortly to see if it made a difference....lol

I've never heard anything negative said about anything with the Chambers name attached. I never would have thought a liner would come with instructions.

Good thing about a worn out over sized touch hole is she sure lights quick. And if I mounted a small tube to the flash pan I could put a BB in it and shoot in two directions at once. The bad part is I'm shooting in two directions at once.

If you'll use LHDB (left-handed drill bits) for such procedures you'll be AMAZED at how quickly/easily things of RH thread can be removed.

The drilling action creates heat and vibration and generally pulls the part out before you expect it.  Simpler and more effective than EZ-out type products in my experience.

Sources: If you can find a non-mega-chain auto parts store, there's a good chance they have a few.  Otherwise get a set from your favorite industrial supply house.    ;)

I would use a screw extractor (same as EasyOut?) to pull the old liner, and i would put in the next size up of a Chambers White Lightning.

One detail I forgot to mention. The liner in the rifle appears to be made of brass. I'm thinking an easy out might just strip through it. I'm working from an I-phone so I can't post pictures. Maybe if some kind soul would let me email a pic or two they could post for me? Thanks.

Left hand drill bits are the way to go if you have a source for them. Chambers white lightning liners are the best. Just hope nobody used Loctite on the threads. Stores used to sell a screw extraction set that had easy outs, and the corresponding left hand twist drill, you hardly ever use the easy outs, in my experience.

I used to have a really nice tool set. A bottom feeder helped himself to a lot of my stuff after the fire. Easy outs used to be made of steel. Seems like their made out of pot metal or pig iron these days. But like I said it's brass. Or maybe brass coated. The screw driver "slots" aren't really slots at all. And that's half the problem.

That is the last resort.  Even if you do have to go that route, you can measure the remaining hole and pitch of the threads in the barrel.  The Chambers WL liners are great, but have a special thread pitch.  Since your liner has a slot, it is probably not a Chambers.

Sorry for delay, had to go get some Deet. Ticks are as thick as I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure it's not a Chambers, or any brand. For all I know it's home made. Wish I could post pics but alas, I can not. Plugging touch hole with toothpick ain't gonna happen. I'm sure I could whittle something to fit but I don't think penetrating oil of any kind will help. Thinking maybe heat, then uber small chisel into brass to act as screwdriver? Trying to get it out in one piece to match threads. May not be possible but if it's brass and not plated (don't think it is, too many shots for plating to hold up), maybe.

In know it's a lot to ask. Especially if you're as techno- moronic as I am. Take pic, upload to photo bucket 2 sites, yada yada. But if someone would post a picture or two for me I think folks could give me a solution and cut back on guess work. I've gotten good ideas, and I thank everyone again, really. But with the liner being brass I think an easy out would just strip through it. But it is Sunday night with many better things to do. So I'll just sit here by myself. Alone in thought. Praying for divine intervention. The forbarence of reptiles, and the kindness of strangers.(ibid).

Just for info sakes..berylium copper was a common material for liners some years ago.
I believe that Dixie Gun Works sold them. They could easily be mistaken for brass

If I only had a picture to post... No, I don't believe this could in any way be mistaken for copper, berillium copper, or any other. It looks like home made brass but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

I gave up years ago futzyn around trying to unscrew liners.  I just drill them out, chase the threads with the appropriate tap and install the new liner and I'm done and shooting.  In your case where you don't know the size, sneak up on it a bit at a time.  I'll bet it's a 1/4-28 thread and a #3 drill will just clear the threads.

I sent Dave B some pictures and he's gonna post for me. I've done a lot of work on a lot of rifles. But Maureen is my pride and joy. This may seem like child's play to most. Like you said, drill it out, chase the threads, shoot. But for some reason I'm almost scared to work on this rifle. I don't want to mess anything up. No oops on this rifle.
