Cut the dang breech plug tang too short!
« on: June 15, 2016, 05:45:05 PM »
My first (no doubt not the last) major screw-up.  TOTW 1803 Harper's Ferry...I carefully looked at several original rifle pictures and decided the plug tang length needed to be about 2/3 the distance between the side plate screws...cut it to length, then noticed that it's about 1/4 inch shorter than the pre-inlet on the top of the stock.  Yes, I'm an idiot.

1.  I can get another breech plug from TOTW - how difficult would it be for a novice to fit it correctly to my barrel?

2.  I can fill the gap with...something.... Any suggestions?

3.  I hate making major mistakes....

You can make a patch for the opening with wood.

You could have a piece welded back. There is likely a shop near you with a TIG welder that could readily fix this. Some careful work with a file to clean up the weld and you are back in business.

JBJ - I've already filed the end of the tang round...I assume it's too late for TIG welding...

Mike - I've thought about wood filler...I've got a bit more inletting to do - does anyone know of a recipe for homemade wood filler, like using ground up inletting shavings with some sort of glue?

Thanks for the replies!

With all due respect please don't! Find a piece of wood, preferable from the same as the stock blank, shape it to fit and glue it in. If you match the grain/color etc it probably won't be noticeable. I would bet money that if you use wood filler you will regret it later.

No, not too late, just a little more complicated, but still doable.

No, if you decide not to have the tang welded/lengthened, do as Dennis suggested.

The wood filler container in gun shops should be rigged to a fence charger, so you don't jump on that fix without thinking long and hard first.

Weld it and the gaps and shape to fit.

If it was up to me I would weld it up and file to size.

If the tang is thick enough you can forge it longer with a cross peen hammer when hot.

If you don't have access to welding or welding abilities, but can hard solder or braze, you can extend the tang the correct amt by either of those methods.
Doing  dovetail joint between the two pieces instead of a plain butt joint further reinforces it and when done the whole piece is filed back to the shape you need.

Go ahead and inlet the now repaired tang d solder into the stock,,yes it will have a hard solder or braze line visible but that'll go away in the next step.

Once the tang is inletted and fitted, shaped closely to the contour of the top of the wrist, remove the breech bolt from the bbl and mark the entire tang,,front , both sides and back edge to an equal depth from the top surface. The amt needn't be more than 1/16",,less is OK.
What you are going to do is replace that evenly removed material from the top surface of the tang with one piece of thin steel and soft solder it into place. Something akin to half soleing a shoe.
That will cover the braze repair line underneath so it won't show on the finished rifle. It's thick enough to be  further filed and finished if needed but should be near done  which is why the tang was finished up to begin with. It can be engraved at that thickness too.

Sounds  like a lot of work but it's not really hard to do. Plus it's a way of saving a cut or damaged tang for the welding challenged.
Just another way of doing things...

Welding and refiling got my vote.  Everything is going to be okay (until I screw up again or my ignorance stops me cold again)....

I'm heading toward 60...back in my twenties, if I had picked up a hobby like this, then other than whatever books were available and perhaps being fortunate enough to know a couple of knowledgeable folks would have been the extent of any help available...with this message board we get LOTS of information, opinions, etc., and even if we don't follow one person's opinion, it is archived in our heads (or at least on this board) for later.  I love it!  Back then for this screw-up I would have used some sort of wood filler (and regretted it as some pointed out).

Kutter, your idea is fantastic...if I hadn't been out in the Man-Hut filing away (I already had a guy weld it), I would have tried that!

Thanks again to all for the great advice!

Seeing your comment made me think that ALR is much like the books "Gunsmith Kinks" with the exception that you can ask a specific question, be able to post photos of it and then sit back and get almost immediate suggestions from some of the best builders in the country, opps make that the world since we are blessed to have many great builders from several other countries!
