Just finished Early Jacob Dickert
« on: June 20, 2016, 12:07:55 AM »
I finally finished an early Jacob Dickert that I have been picking at for sometime.    Sadly there were even more problems than I knew once I took the photographs.   I wish I could see these problems as clearly BEFORE the finish has been applied.  Alas,  I am a captive to my poor eyesight and fine motor control.  That said, tell me what you think.   Should I bother hauling it up to Dixons?

I should note that I was asked to slightly age it.   I would have preferred to finish it as new.

Looks good to me Mark. I don't think I have seen any of your early styled work before. Your aging looks good too.

I think it looks great. I agree with other comments, the finish on the stock and the metal looks really good.

Mark,
We all see the warts after they're done.
You just need to take some crappier pictures like the rest of us.  ;)

But really, it looks pretty good to me.
Nice rendition!

You should be proud of your results! If there are flaws/problems, as you say you fixed them like a master would and should.
I've built two like that one and and several with wood boxes, so I think I know what it is supposed to look like by heart. Very nice aging on it!

Nice work Mark. $#*! if there wasn't a flaw in it it would be machine made. The aging looks right too.

Really good architecture Mark. I personally would rub back the barrel to be less patchy. Most originals I have seen are more uniformly rusted, with the rust and pitting thicker in some areas but more uniform in color. Just my preference.

Mark you did a great job on this rifle and you should be proud of it. Like others have said us builders are pretty hard on ourselves and always think we could have done better but that is just us wanting to turn out a perfect piece. Well guess what! The originals that we admire so much are not perfect either but we love them just the same.

So stand proud young man, that is a good job. Thanks for sharing it with us.

You ask if you should carry it to Dixons, I'd be proud to carry that fine rifle anywhere! Your eyes are better than mine, or at least more critical of your own work because I don't see a thing wrong with her. Beautiful rifle. Thanks for sharing. If I'd have made that I wouldn't call it sharing so much as showing off!
