Looks awesome!! I recently acquired RCA vol. 1 & 2, #48 is my favorite so far after a few months of poring over these books. Great rendition of this rifle!!

Very nicely executed, Mark, well done! What did you do with the lock and barrel as far as treatment? I've seen several original rifles that looked very similar in appearance, and really like what you did. Again, nicely done all around! Hope to see it at Dixon's.

Ed,

The metal treatment is my standard for bright steel patina; cold blue and tincture of iodine. I rusted the metal, polished back, and left unprotected to continue to rust slowly. As I set the gun outside a number of times for the finish to dry, there was some bird @#$%/!!. The birds liked to sit on the stand I leaned the rifle up against. Dennis said I shouldn't mention the bird @#$%/!! as everyone would then want to use it.

That is fantastic! I love the entire rifle but especially the finish you put on your barrel and lock. What technique did you use for finishing those parts. The barrel looks almost identical to an old Winchester I have had for 50 years. It is really neat to see someone as talented as yourself that can emulate a finish of 130 years plus. Thanks for posting for all of us to see.

You mentioned cold blue and tincture of iodine. Which cold blue and do you mix them together and apply or lis there some other technique. I'm interested in trying to use your technique on one of my rifles. Thanks and I really love your work.

I work a small area at a time and apply the cold blue and then the tincture of iodine while the cold blue is still wet. I use a separate foam applicator for each chemical. The metal needs to be degreased, but don't obsess over it. I use denatured alcohol or acetone. Usually I use one of those chemicals to remove the marker I use as a transfer medium, so it is just a matter of wiping the whole barrel down.

You did a real nice job Mark. What you said about seeing the mistakes after you photographed the gun happens to me all the time. These high definition cameras will tell on you.

We are our own worst critics. Everything I've ever built, be it a gun, a piece of furniture, a fly rod, or a tool shed, all I see are the flaws.

Mark as all have already said. Very nice work. What does the rifle weigh? I have heard that chicken @#$%/!! has high nitrate content so it would have an effect on oxidation I would imagin. You would also not want to use it indoors.
