Horn/W 4 Rings And A Pewter & Horn Tip

 This is a larger horn about 15" around the outside curve, the two part tip is 3 1/2 of that. The 2 1/2" Walnut base is hollowed out about 3/4s its length, it is held in place by 5 pins that also hold the lower ring in place. The tip is made up of a Pewter collar and a tip turned from Horn. The three rings are held in place by 3 pins each. Color is AF and Saddle Tan Oil Based Leather dye covered with Brown Shoe Polish and buffed off. Once the AF is one and dry I rub the horn down with a coarse cloth, after the Dye is wiped off and dry it gets rubbed down again, there will be a low sheen, then the Shoe Polish goes on, once it dries it is buffed off with a softer cloth two or three times.

Top shelf Tim!__ Looks really good.  Do you find that these pewter collars seem to off balance some powder horns?

dang them pewter tips. I have yet to figure them out.
This one is done very well and I like the overall look of the horn but then I have yet to see one of your horns that I don't like.

The spout put it over the top for me, the combination of pewter and the slender horn spout are a knock out. Thanks for the detail on coloring. I am going to have to try that. John

It amazes me how you horn artists perform such marvelous magic on such a simple item. Truly wonderful  ;)!

 Not really. On this one although it looks as though it would be heavy the Pewter has a 9/16th hole through it and the end at the horn is tapered a bit more. Once turned more weight is removed, with the Butt hollowed out there is no balance problems or weight issues for that matter. I have made Philly and Ringed horns that are heavier. At least I think so.

My preference is F and I era horns with all the scrim and throat work,............but that is one beautiful piece. Awesome work.

I read your article on banded horns in Muzzleloader when you pin the bands do you just go in so far or all the way through the horn ? Outstanding horn very nice indeed .

  The pins on the body go all the way through the hole is .043 the pin is .045. The same size bit and pin are used on the tips but a rod the same size as the pour hole in inserted, the hole is drilled and the pins tapped in until they hit the rod and then they are trimmed off, I start with a shorter pin.
