I just gotta say that the thing that really makes that pop is the sideplate. I love the flow of it. I hope there's not a patent on it......

Thanks all. Now back to fowling pieces and other smooth bores. The next two projects are a cherry stocked fowling piece with a 16 bore Getz barrel and a small 54 smooth, English walnut, fowling piece for my daughters hunting gun. That one has a barrel Rice made for me . I designed it based on some circa 1700 barrels I like. It has a 1 1/16" breech with a rapid taper.

In this case, build, shooting stance, comb thickness, etc. did not require any cast-on (left handed gun)

This was number 2. The barrel was already stocked in a rifle pattern precarve and I altered it as much as I could.

I liked number 1 with the brass lock plate and pan. Did you make that from a casting? Also the front sight. How is that attached? There is no visible dovetail.

Mike, the brass plate lock was direct from Jim Chambers.
The grotesque sight was soldered on.

James - who's but plate did you use on this one. I find it interesting that the inside interior angle made between the top tang and flat of the butt looks to be less than 90 degrees. I like the effect it has on the looks and the pitch of the butt. I rarely see a fowler made that has even a 90 degree angle formed here - And most seem to form an angle greater than 90 degrees. The way you have yours pitched seems to give the appearance of, and suggest an earlier gun ( to my eye anyway ) Curious if you altered your butt plate from it's original shape. Looking forward to seeing it in person. Tom

Tom, that plate was from Reeves a long time ago. I am pretty sure I increased the width a bit and moved it to conform to my stock profile. I also silver soldered a hidden hook under the top so as not to utilize a cross pin. This plate has a fairly flat top line. Some of the others roll a bit more but I thought this style better suited the more parallel comb.

The only thing I see wrong with that rifle I the lock is on the wrong side, how did you manage to make that mistake? Really, that is a beautiful piece, I may not be able to do that kind of work myself but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate beauty when I see it, and if you think the lock needs to be on that side then I guess it's ok.
