Number 3 Finished
« on: July 15, 2016, 05:16:58 PM »
I built this with a back story of a Virginia stocked rifle using parts from an old English fowling piece that had a blown barrel. The premise is that the old stock was copied to make the rifle.
Although the Mike Rowe lock (which is a dead ringer for a lock from a 1750's James Barbar duck gun) is a bit fancy for a rifle utilizing surplus parts, it was my best choice for an off the shelf left handed round face lock for the left handed owner. The .60 caliber barrel is an Ed Rayl, The butt plate and trigger guard are my altered versions of castings from originals by Reeves. I made the sights (rear sight is wrought iron), side plate, trigger and plate, etc.
Lots of warts but I learned where I need more instruction and where I need to invest more time in practice.

Really nice and the lock is on the proper side.  For another LH round faced option I have a LH fowler by James Klein, and he used a Siler gunmaker's lock filed to the rounded profile.  It works OK if you don't look too close, but there isn't quite enough metal to make the full round faced cross section.

You kicked some butt on this!  I like it.  Where did the side plate design come from?

Jim, the design is a combination of two or three side plates from English pieces I have seen.
The low cut baluster on the butt stock is inspired from that Richards gun I got from you and some of the other stock features came from my silver mounted Heylin gun.

James that is a Beauty, I don't know if it's shadows or the color and finish are highlighted but I love the way it looks, Pops may be a better word.

Thanks Tim.
I had super success with using tannic acid and then nitric.
On that I used Jim Kibler's oil varnish. Best finish I have used to date!

There's sure a lot to like here.  Apart from the lovely wood, metal and wood finishes, the architecture screams hunting rifle.  The comb is almost parallel to the line of sight -  a great English feature - and that says it'll be completely comfortable to shoot with the heaviest loads.  There is no extra wood, especially on the butt stock, yet it has a beautiful fat butt plate, another feature that lends itself to the hunting rifle.  Most impressive all around...a job to behold!!

Taylor, good catch on that comb. I meant to mention it.  This is to be his hunting rifle and I wanted to get close to parallel to allow for a good stout load and push back instead of up on the cheek. My main focus on this was to concentrate on architecture. I chose everything but the barrel. It has very very little taper. My lower fore end goes from 1/8" on the bottom meat at the guard to 1/16" at the entry thimble. I had just enough web below the barrel to get the 8/32 lock nail thru and just skimmed the inside of the barrel channel.
This project really taught me a lot as well as exposed my weaknesses that need more attention.

The thing is, you know every perceived flaw.  From where I stand, I like it!  Stock architecture,  finish, carving, I don't see anything wrong with it.
