Jim Filipski found this picture and sent it to me.

I do have a lot of photos. And an internal backup drive, AND an external backup drive.

I lost my hard drive once, and don't ever ever want to go thru that again!

Tom,

For another example of a monster at the wrist / comb intersection check out the 1740's French gun shown by Hayward in the "Art of the Gunmaker".  It's in wire rather than carved.  It like the Hauschka example is most certainly based on the DeLaCollombe print.

The DeLaCollombe prints I mentioned are included in the "Flintlock" by Torsten Lenk.  The French gun I was refering to is in the "Art of the Gunmaker" by Hayward.  Lenk's book has been recently reprinted in paper back version.  Beware though...   the photography which was never very good (1930's technology) is worse in the paper back version.  I ended up buying a used hard back version that I think was published in the 60's.  For someone without a real interest in seventeenth and early eighteenth century firearms (primarily French) it may be a bit dry, but I think it's a must have.

tom, thanks for the additional pics you emailed me...jim had mentioned there is gonna be a carving class at the log cabin this summer so i will get my jeager completely shaped and wait to start carving it till the class.so that gives me some time to practice and play around with sculpting some clay...would rather start the carving under the watchful eye of jim and ian so they will keep me from going crazy and hacking it all up....lol

The following link shows the series of steps I followed in making an Edward Marshall (Jaeger styled) rifle from a square plank.

I hope someone places Hoot Al's tutorial on stock shaping under the "Tutorial" section so that I can find it at a later date.  Very well done.

This rifle was for my friend Jim Hrisoulas, Master Bladesmith.  He claimed swinging a big hammer all day stretched his arm.  He wanted the 16" pull to fit himself better.  When he got it, he said it fit like a glove.

If you are looking for  book reference of gun photos and information. I used the book, "Jaeger Rifles: Collected Articles Published in Muzzle Blasts.  Written by George Shumway.  It is 220 pages, softcover: $35.00 plus $5.00 S&H

Link: http://www.shumwaypublisher.com/store/shop/item.asp?itemid=21&catid=3

I bought mine directly from George Shumway. He even signed it for me.

Good book.

If you want to see all the steps I followed in building the rifle, then go to this link. At the bottom of the page is a listing of all the steps in blue, such as "Inletting The Buttplate".  Click on the line and it will take you to another page outlining the steps with photos on how I did it.

Hope you find this useful with your projects.
