Smoothing out tight spots in a new bore???
« on: July 17, 2016, 08:59:42 PM »
I know darn good and well this topic has been covered repeatedly here, but I've searched high and low, and can't find a thread, so...

Mods, if this topic's in the wrong subforum, feel free to move as needed.

The Bride's TC Cherokee (came with a brand new unfired .45 barrel:  the bore was still factory-blued!) has two "tight" spots in it:  one about 10-12" down from the muzzle, and one about 20" down; for the remainder of the bore, she can easily load a .440 Hornady RB with a .015 oiled patch.

To get that loading past the two trouble-spots, I have to put a wood knob over the end of the ramrod and tap the load past with the heel of my hand; she'd have to use a rubber mallet (don't worry:  she hasn't tried that).  Once past, she can push the load down the bore with her ramrod, as God and all good barrel builders intended.

I did, however, snap a new hickory ramrod once, trying to get past the first spot.

With a bore light, I can't see any rust or rough edges at those spots.

As you can imagine, accuracy isn't exactly stellar, either.

I got her some .010 patches so she can continue shooting "her Baby" and not get discouraged, but those two tight spots trouble me:  barrels aren't "supposed" to be like that, and I'm a little finicky about barrels.

I'm familiar with fire-lapping a bore in centerfires, but the lead ball isn't going to lend itself well to the exact method I've used successfully in my varmint rifles.

Is this something I can remedy (safely) using some jewelers rouge and a tightly patched ball a few times; is this something best remedied by a reputable ML barrel builder... or is this something I should simply find a patch that'll load well for her, and ignore the rough spots?

Are the spots rough or tight?  Rough can be polished out but tight might require more metal to be removed than polishing can accomplish.

EC, they feel and look tight, rather than rough:  like sayin', with a bore light (don't have access to a camera to 'scope the bore with), I don't see any edges or protrusions.

Mostly, I was wondering if impregnating a few tight (in this case, say, .015 patch and .440 ball), oiled patches with some fine rouge and firing them out had any real likelihood of damaging the bore.

I'm perfectly happy with trying something that might or might not do some good, as long as I'm not going to do any harm.

But you've got an excellent point about the amount of metal to remove, if it's an issue of "tight" (as opposed to "rough"):  as hard as it is to load past those two points, I'm afraid that if the bore's tight there, there's quite a bit of steel that needs to go; more than I can deal with at home.

Mark the ramrod after measuring to the tight spots on the outside of the barrel and see if the marks line up with any screw holes or dovetails.

Or...staked tenons on the underside of the barrel.  I've seen some barrels dimpled inside by over zealous staking

Ah; thanks guys:  I had not thought of checking for... umm... external intrusions.  Was busy just looking down the bore.

in any case contact TC they are very good about solving such complaints and more than likely can provide a answer to solve the problem. in some hard cases they have simply replaced the barrel. so go to the source and ask for help.

That's some great news right there:  never had a T/C product before, so didn't know that.

I'll start there.

TC is no longer making sidelocks last I've heard...and heard once they are out of stock (which they likely are) it's all over...

Internet rumors...but I'd call and see what they can do...

When they did for sure honor everything..you often got better results boxing it up with a letter explaining the problem..make model etc.

They changed their flintlock designto spark better and give better Flint life...on the phone they refused to help...I boxed it with a letter and got the "updated" lock in return....

I'm concerned about the "tight spots".  Sounds like a new barrel..but I've never had a barrel with noticeable tight spots like that...though I don't buy tons of barrels lol...just seems odd..and sounds very tight...

Sorry it took me a few days to respond; had a few long days at work.

Thanks for the information:  I'll see what T/C has to say, if I get a weekday off here soon.

I too am very curious about just what's causing the loading/accuracy issues (and whether the two are even related).  Also pretty impatient to get The Bride out to test-drive the accompanying .32 barrel and see if it's got similar issues (which would, as Mauser mentioned, tend to indicate to my mind that it's simply a "new barrel" issue); again, getting both of us off work on the same day tends to be a rare event lately.
