Schreyer/Schroyer reference material
« on: July 19, 2016, 05:36:46 PM »
Going to take a stab at an early Schreyer. I can't afford the spendy Shumway book on Schreyer. Can anyone tell me what might be a good or next best reference book or CD for doing an Early Schreyer rifle?
                                                                                Thanks, Blessings, Bill

Bill,

You might want to ask your local public library if they participate in the Inter-Library Loan program.  They will locate the book you want from participating libraries around the country.  Low fee, sometimes free.

Bill, I can get my Muzzle Blasts "Earliest Rifles" articles out and send you copies. Do you have Rifles of Colonial America volume 1?  Or are you looking for rifles not in that volume?

Rich,
I am a noob so I planned to go with something on the plain side. This caught my eye.   http://cabincreek.net/revspecs/original-george-schreyer-smooth-rifle/ other than that, going with something early is preferred. I don't have much in the way of reference material. I have Grinslades fowler book and the Moravian Gunmakers book. The only book that I have that has a Schreyer gun in it is the Gunsmiths of Greenville County. I don't have RCA vol I, but would consider picking it up.  I am headed to Dixon's next week and hope to do some shopping for a good reference and was looking for which book or CD I should focus on. I have several muzzleblast Magazines on hand. Which year and month was that article in?

Bill,
The Kentucky Rifle Foundation will have its products for sale on Brian LaMaster's table at Dixon's. We have two seperate CD's for sale that have pictures of an early Schroyer and a more classical one. The early Schroyer is on the CD that has the pictures of the rifles featured at the National Firearms Museum for the NRA. The other Schroyer is on the CD labeled York and Adams County. Each CD is $25 and you get at least 10 high resolution photos of each rifle. Each CD contains 20 different rifles. Hope this helps.

Our own Eric Von A has plans for a Schroyer on his web site.

He usually is at Dixon's in the tent outside the store.  He usually has copies of his plans with him.

Thanks for all of the great info! Now I know where to direct my focus when I get to Dixon's. Without everyone's suggestions I would be like a cat chasing a laser pointer up there!

MB January 1980: Shumway article on another early Schroyer-attributed rifle with a 2 piece brass box.

MB February 1980: Shumway article on wooden box Schroyer attributed rifle.

MB December 1997: Shumway article on Schroyer attributed smooth rifle.

MB September 1978: Shumway article on Schroyer-attributed wooden box rifle.
