bird mouth round ball bullet dispenser.....ever see one???
« on: July 19, 2016, 07:07:55 PM »
I have been messing with a small horn trying to make a bird head round ball bullet dispenser. I have the birds head with beak open an the balls make it to the beak tip, but cannot imaging how to stop all the rest of the balls in horn reservoir to stop crowding the beak tip when tipping the head down to advance a ball forward............anybody ever mess with something like this..........sonny

I may be missing something, as I see it pull out the stopper, roll a ball out put the stopper back in. A  picture may help.

I agree with Tim.  Your bird will need a stopper in his mouth.

I saw one where the top and bottom of the bird's beak just barely retained the ball, but they flexed enough to allow the ball to be pulled out with your fingers, and the beak retained the next ball in line.

I did a search and found this under "duck bill ball bag".  Cool, huh?

I made a couple of these for different ball sizes.  Most are made to hang around your neck.  For large caliber guns they can be heavy and cumbersome.  The first one was one with a flat "powder horn type" butt that sat on a loading bench.  It was made for a .395 ball. The one in the photo was for a .45, I think.

There was one at Dixon's this weekend, won several well deserved awards, intricately made and in the form of a crow's head, with a (pivoting?) Pennsylvania keystone state shaped plate on the bottom.

It seems to me this contraption would be like having a maroca tied to your tail. How would you keep it from rattling all the time?

When the bird is nosed down, one bullet advances (like he's eating a cherry  which stays in his beak ). Its really not very noisy, as the round balls in the base can pivot with the moving motion by the rope attachment..........Hope you can see the pictures.......I really never put pictures into my messages before!!!!............sonny

I think your raven beak carving is excellent, but your photography is lousy!

How about putting in a little curved piece of spring steel, a "tongue" so to speak... that stops the ball from falling out, and you just grab it with two fingers and slip it past the spring?
If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Sonny,

We got some professional pictures done at Dixon's of your crow's head. With your permission, I will post them here. Also, PM me your preferred email address and I will get the set to you.

Spotted Bull, that is really awesome.

I could imagine a variation where the lower jaw was separate and could be opened by pushing on a tab on the throat, and it would close itself (using a flat spring perhaps).
If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Thats the neatest thing I've seen in a long time. I don't know how practical it is but it sure is cool! Excellent craftsmanship. I guess the wire loop through his neck pushes the spring in its bottom bill?
