Ok Tim Crosby, here ya go!
« on: August 07, 2016, 07:03:41 PM »
A couple of weeks ago I posted images of the rifle I am currently building based on an original in William Ivey's book.  Tim Crosby replied to the post and noted that there were some nice horns in the book that would go well with the rifle.  Not being one to ignore the advice of such a respected craftsman such as Crosby,  I ACCEPTED THE CHALLENGE.

So here it is.  I did not make the base plug.  Oddly enough I found it on ebay and have had it laying around for years.  The rest is all done with hand filing work.

It is not an exact copy of any of the horns, just in the spirit.

 Nice work Coryjoe, you captured the essence of that horn. I recognized it immediately not only form Ivey's book but also from Michael Briggs;

Oh, yeah, I love that book as well.  I have to admit these are not my favorite style of horn to make.  Which is why I usually leave it up to you.

I appreciate it Skillman.  I often think I should get a lathe, but then I worry that some of my file work might lose its character.

I did all my horn work by hand with the help of a drill press and a sander only for many years. I felt that was how it had been done "in the day" (except the power tools). A good friend kind of twisted my arm and took me to buy my lathe. It introduced me to so many different methods, styles, and other accoutrements that I now wouldn't be without. Not pushing you, just saying.

 I completely missed the hand done part! That is amazing work for a file. I'm with  Steve, a lathe will make work like that quicker, maybe 15 minutes on a tip, after it is pieced together.

A very nice horn. I'd be pleased to match it with any of my SMR's.

Here is the set.  Nathan Allen made the knife, "granny Sue" stitched the strap for, everything else I made.
