That is very very nice!  Great job.  I need to carve my fowling gun in a similar fashion, but have held off pending more practice ....
Yours is one of the best examples I've seen

One thing that strikes me about this carving, Mitch, is that it is WORKMANLIKE, it does not appear to be fussed over, but is crisp and clean. Excellent work!

Thanks Ton,you are correct the sculpting is just what the chisel left behind. The backround was chisel and then scraped lightly!!!

If that's workmanlike, then my carving must be kindergarten-like!

Mitch, there's one small thing. Some parts of the carving are always done as a scoop not a block cut. See you at ClA to explain.

Mitch, in the small bit of practice I have had with this design, I have always scalloped the ends of the shell when hollowing them out.  Your carving looks great, but just different from mine.  Not having had a chance to hold an original with this design, I am just guessing from pictures I have studied.  I don't know what is correct, which is why I am glad you showed and example of yours.

This is also a hard area for me to carve, because the grain can be a bit difficult to deal with in this area, and chip-out is not uncommon here.  Extremely sharp chisels are required in this area, which you obviously have by the look of your cuts.  Great looking shell design.

Bill, Are you talking about the scoops frequently seen at the ribbon area  close to the tang?
