RR hole too high
« on: August 18, 2016, 03:15:40 AM »
Whenever the RR hole was drilled it drifted a little high for the "C" swamped barrel channel.  I realized I was going to have the problem so I placed the front lock bolt as high as possible but it will still interfere w/ the ramrod. I have a couple of ideas on the fix. I could cut through the barrel channel for 6-8" in front of the breech, then cut the RR channel a bit lower so the RR can clear the front lock bolt.  Or, I have a 3/8" 48" long drill. I could run it back & forth within the RR hole while applying downward pressure on the bit.  I need more than 1/8" for the ramrod to clear.  Suggestions?? ???

Do away with the front lock bolt.  Use a hook to hold the front of the lock in place and put a short screw in the front hole of the side plate.

Boompa,  I've dropped ram rod holes by cutting bottom section of barrel channel, then scraping what I can reach, then re-running the drill bit with pressure applied to drill downward.  I then just glue in a new piece of wood @ barrel channel.  I've gone the other route of using one lock bolt, but prefer 2 even tho I know one will hold the lock well enough.

Here is what I did in this situation.

There is one photo missing.  But this method worked perfectly.

I used a 6-32 front bolt and filed a slight groove in the bottom of a thick barrel.  I always verify where my ramrod hole is near the front lock bolt by drilling a small hole through the bottom of the barrel channel into the rr hole.  I can figure out if the front bolt needs to be canted a little to miss the rr hole, or small, or if I have plenty of room.  I usually have to make my own sideplate after I know where the bolt heads will be.  Someone once said that a 6-32 bolt will break.  I never tighten a lock bolt much more than snug.  If it does break, remove the bolt and lock and put in a new bolt.

I have notched the front bolt in this case in the past.  I figured it was better to notch the bolt instead of turn the whole diameter down, which would have compromised it's strength.  Of course, this means you must have the bolt indexed.  But I hate doing it, as some dolt may not remove his ramrod before trying to take out his lock bolts.  Another thing I have done is used a dowel to fill the miss-drilled hole, and was careful to get it right the second time.

Neither of these solutions has been satisfactory for me, but they are the only ones I have.  One way to do it though is to fake it, and make your front bolt just an artifice that just threads into the wood, but the dishonesty in that to me that is almost sacrilege.  I filled a hole with a dowel twice once, since it wander both times, no matter how careful I was, or how slowly I progressed.

Having had a failure or two when doing this, I decided I would shoot for a front lock screw that was a little on the high side.  This seems to work well.  I would like to be able to see the front lock bolt when the barrel is out of the stock, so I know it is about as high as I can get it.  But this doesn't help with your problem.

I suppose another solution could be to re- drill the front lock bolt hole.  This would require filling the hole in the wood and the lock, and using a different angle when drilling through the original hole in the side plate.  This is a viable solution, but only in a situation where you have the latitude to be able to pull it off.

In my opinion, drilling the ramrod hole is probably the hardest task in building a proper rifle.  Even the ancient builders had this problem, as is evidenced by so many repairs where a hole came through the bottom of the stock and was covered with an inlay by those gunsmiths.  I don't care how often you clear chips or how slow you might progress... The bit can still wander, depending on how the wood wants you to go.  It is the task I fear most when building a rifle.

All suggestions much appreciated. :)   The lock is a large Davis Jaeger so I really need the front lock bolt.  I'm looking at lowering the RR hole at this point. I really don't have far to go.  Considering this is a beefy Christian Springs .62, C barrel I have room to move the RR hole down some. If it were a dainty little Kentucky gun I'd have a bigger problem.

We were talking about a similar solution as the bent channel scraper at WKU this June.  I wish I had written it down.
If I recall, it was either bent like the suggestion in the link above, or they had attached a spring like mechanism to the top of the scraper.  The spring would push on the top of the existing RR channel, pushing the scraper down.  I suspect the end result is the same.
Either is a brilliant solution.

On the picture I have in Ed's link I turned an 10/32 screw down to about a 6/32 diameter for my ramrod to pass, no indexing necessary. Anybody that turns their lock bolts down tight enough to shear off this screw should probably take up another hobby.

If thinning the front bolt won't get it done, I would go with a forward staple, and hook arrangement.   Going through the barrel channel on a gun of this caliber, when the forearm is already compromised by the close vicinity of the ramrod hole, would be my last choice.

I'm surprised no one has yet suggested tapering the end of the ramrod.  I'd try that first.

I'v done this twice now.....re-cut the RR channel to the proper depth from the barrel inlet side with a round end router bit in a router.  Put a piece of hobby store 0.014 wall thickness brass tubing down in the new grove and make sure the ram rod slides in and out easily.  I then tack the tube in place with some cyanoacralate glue.  I seal up around both ends of the brass tube with a little wax and then Acra Glass Gel bed the entire breech area.  Now you have a brass tube for the ram rod and the stock is strengthened through the whole area.

Worked out great for me and it was fast to do.  I usually bed the breech area of any barrel anyway (to strengthen the area and waterproof it completely), so not much added effort to straighten out the hole.  And the router does an excellent job.....much better and faster than I can do the same thing with a gouge.

That is what I have done and can vouch.

I think I would go with a 6/32 lock bolt and try tapering the rod.Draw everything out on the lock plate side first to see if it would work.
