A couple Projects..... (casting photos added)
« on: September 01, 2016, 02:24:47 AM »
These are a couple projects I've been working on and off (mostly off), between builds.  The pistol is a silver mounted "kit" from Chris Altland that I've had laying around the shop for three years.  Dave's (Smartdog) excellent post on wire inlay, and Mitch's shell carving post gave me inspiration to finally get going on this project.  Still have a long way to go, but all the hard parts are done now, so I can concentrate on the "bling"!

The second project is a English fowler sideplate that I chiseled out of a piece of brass.  I was going to go the wax mold / cast route with the side plate, but decided to chisel one instead.  I figured I can always use this one as a pattern if I decide I want to cast one.  Still a fair amount of clean up to do on this as well...

I'd be happy to answer any questions if anyone has them...

Ed, Like you really need some inspiration to be artistic!!!!  The projects are looking really awesome.  Your wire inlay has been steadily improving, your shell carving inspiring by itself without outside influence, but the chiseled brass mount takes the cake.  I know that one is new for you and it looks GREAT!  Not sucking up here, just admiring what you do!  And don't you dare slack!  ;D

Great work Ed!!  That looks like it came right from the bench of Griffin or Freeman. I like your take on the shell. The contrast between the concave surfaces and flatter areas is wonderful.

Ed,
Nice clean work as always, you have a great amount of talent. Does your side plate fit Chambers round face locks?

Thanks, all....

Phillip, yes, the side plate will fit a Chambers round face lock.  In fact, that's what I'll be using for the fowler...

Best,

There is much I admire in all of the work in these photos. If you will forgive my suggestion, when you finish the side-plate (which is gorgeous!) you should use it to make a mould (rubber?) for waxes to cast, and perhaps consider offering these side-plates for sale.

Thanks for posting the inspirational work.

Absolutely fantastic and beautiful.  Sculpted metal is a challenge I am going to try someday, but not yet.  Looks great, Ed!

Carl, I've been toying with the idea...  I'll see how things go, just might do that.

Ed,

That wire work is awesome!  (And the carving ain't too shabby either!)  I've not been a big fan of wire work as many times it is added to carving and just seems kinda stuck on there, but yours is great.  It looks like it is meant to be there.  I like it!  I'm working on a walnut stocked pistol, and I may have to add some wire.

Oh, and on the side plate.....

The wire work at the Butt is amazing, it is one thing to plan the design, another to draw it and make adjustments, another to make the cuts. Then to add the wire and get it to mirror is quite an accomplishment.
Beautiful work Ed, great hand and Eye.

Cool stuff Ed.  I have a couple of questions.  Could you post a picture of the chisels you used for the sideplate.  I'm curious about those.  Also - might it be easier to do the chiseling first, and then cut out the sideplate?  Just thinking out loud here.

These pieces look spectacular Ed!  Your carving and mirrored wire inlay look so precise and I especially like the whimsical wire work around the barrel key.  Although I enjoy looking at fine engraving, chiseled brass really gets me going.  We all know the work of Mr. Schippers and he has nothing over you on that sideplate my friend.  Stunning work!

Ed is the material holding your beautiful sideplate, pitch, or body filler? I see many people here looking for an engravers ball, but I learned in a silversmithing class years ago, that you can do outstanding work with just a pitch bowl.

Ken, great to hear from you!  I just used a square graver to cut 95% of what you see.  The heavier lines were made by making multiple cuts.  For the round bottom, or "scooped" areas I used a modified point setting tool.  The point setters are made of round stock, with a long point on one end.  I ground off the point to the desired size, then honed a 45 degree face.  It's essentially a large round point graver.  Lindsay sells a template for a round bottom graver if you'd like to be a little more technical.

I feel it would be easier doing this type of thing by cutting out the profile first.  For me, it would be a little easier seeing how everything flows, and also terminating the edges.

Hungry Horse..., the material used to hold the piece is pitch.  It's red pitch, which is a medium pitch, and I purchased it from Rio Grande.  It's mounted on a steel practice plate.  Works really well...

As an aside, I made a casting of the side plate with petro bond sand.  It turned out pretty well.  I'll try to post some photos, and will be using the cast side plate for the fowler I'm working on.

Thanks!

Just for kicks I thought I'd make a casting of the side plate I chiseled, and the attached photos are the result.  I made a cope and drag out some scrap lumber (around 2 1/2" wide) I had laying around.  I used Petro Bond sand for the process which is very similar to delft clay.  There was a fair amount of clean up that needed to be done, but I felt the  details came out pretty nicely...
