Where to install forend swivel on Lyman GPR?
« on: September 06, 2016, 03:50:56 AM »
I'm soliciting recommendations for where to place a forend swivel on my Lyman Great Plains Rifle.  I'm tempted to pop the pin in the metal forend piece and drill it out for the swivel screw, but I wasn't sure how good an idea that would be. I prefer slings on swivels, so one that just ties to the stock and barrel isn't an option for me.  Thanks!

You could drill thru the underbarrel ribat a position where your sling loop would lie on one of the ramrod pipes.

A quick Google search got this from 2010 ...

I use a sling like that mentioned above on rifles that I dont want to drill into the stock on, but there is some play in the sling because it can slide up and down the barrel. If you slip the sling between the ramrod and the barrel this is minimized. On my 2 Lyman GPRs I used the following swivels.

The picture on Midsouths web site is a generic one, not the correct one for the swivels you will get. The fwd swivel is designed to clamp around the magazine tube of a Marlin 357 rifle, but fits around the Lyman ram rod tube perfectly. I removed the forward screw from the toe plate and drilled it out slightly so that I could screw in the lower swivel. Now I can use any sling I want.

You could mount it like this.

or this, through the rib, if it's solid.

If the under rib is removable, I filed a round bottomed groove from the rib bottom and made a roughly  triangular shaped sling attachment from a coat hanger......the 2 ends are hi temp silver soldered.  When the sling is down towards the fore end, it rests on the RR pipe.....Fred

Maybe it's the way Daryl cleaned up his GPR, but I like the attachment to the pipe.  Thanks!

;D  You can't see it, but there is now a large styled button sling mount on the lower butt stock.  Both front and rear mounts are available from Track.

Better picture of the front rib mount along with a button rear - these, on a "Hunkeler" 20 bore.

On a PC - holding down the CTRL button and pushing the + key (or the scroll wheel on your mouse) will enlarge the picture/page. Pressing the Crtl button and pushing the 0 key will return the page to normal size.

I dont like attatching the sling to the ramrod pipe, the pipe, in my opion is not secure enough.  the underbarrel rib is much more securely attatched to the barrel.  A simple hole drilled thru the rib attatches your swivel very securely to the barrel where most of the weight of the gonne is and needs to be supported by the sling when carried over the shoulder.

Daryl, thanks for the follow up picture.  I agree drilling thru the underlug looks like a better, more solid, way to go.  And I recall from posts elsewhere that I want to make sure to pick a place to drill so the swivel falls on the pipe so as not to interfere w/ the RR.  I love this place.  Philip

Welcome, Phip - good point about the 'fall' of the swivel.

Note on both of my guns, the swivel 'falls' onto the pipe.  This is quite important. If it 'falls onto the rod, the rod may be impossible or difficult to remove as the swivel will gall or cut into the rod as the rod is extracted to push the 'started' load down. (upright gun, of course)

TC made thimbles, where the swivel was attached to the thimble and the swivel had a hole drilled so an allen wrench would fit through the hole and the screw could be tightened into the barrel, through the under rib. Not PC, but was used on a lot of TC's. Beats drilling a hole in the forearm.

I believe the picture Daryl posted is what Harden West is describing...

I had one on my TC....HAD is the key word....

It broke...rifle fell... actually into a creek....stock was gouged pretty good but other than that it was alright...can't remember if I pulled the charge and fired it or if I got the charge to fire...I remember being surprised the powder wasn't soaked like I figured it'd be...but I may threw it in the fire and watched it burn...

Anyways...they work...but much more than the weight of the rifle may strip it out and your rifle goes flying...

I had mine strapped across my back...sling was across my chest...not just hanging loose over one shoulder...I jumped the creek..the shock of landing, which wasn't much ripped the stud out of the thimble...

I've never thought about putting one through the under rib....that'd work well with the right design I bet...

Didn't the TC Hawkenses have brass thimbles?
