Barrel saftey question.
« on: September 08, 2016, 10:05:08 PM »
I am thinking of turning the last Barrel I rifled With RunaStava to a straigth octagon to round.  The barrel is Caliber 0.54 and 1"across the flats.  Would this be safe or would it weaken the barrel to much?

Best regards

It will still be 1in. at the breech.  Colerain Barrel Co. sells them with a 1in. breech and a .815in. muzzle diameter.  As long as the metal quality is good it should be fine.

Opps, I made a mistake . The barrel is 15/16" across.

15/16"- flat to flat - what would your muzzle be in diameter after tapering?

To me, 15/16" seems pretty thin - and too light for a hunting rifle, even is straight octagonal. I prefer a bit more weight for offhand or standing shooting.

I wasn't going to taper the barrel , so the muzzel would be 15/16 in diameter.

Depending on barrel steel, it should be OK for moderate loads.imho

edited.  I initially thought the barrel would be too thin for heavy loads - however this is not really the case since there should be .18675" steel between groove depth and air.

There will be enough steel for about any sane load - however the weight of the rifle might not be suitable for heavy loads unless a very wide butt plate, or shoulder protection is used.
