Is relining a barrel feasible?
« on: September 10, 2016, 09:12:08 PM »
I have a rifle I want to keep, but the bore is badly pitted, and accuracy is poor to terrible.  It is .50 cal.  I would like to change it to a .30 or .32 cal.  Is lining a feasible option?

Your better off writting him a letter -- he is a busy man and does not have someone to just answer the phone for him.

Have you considered the weight differential?  I suspect you are looking at adding another 5 pounds to that gun.

Having it bored and lined to .45 might be a good idea to cut the end-weight a bit.

What are the outside dimensions? May be able to freshen it out.

Barrel is the 13/16" .50 cal sidehammer I mentioned in another thread.  Bore is too rusted for accuracy.  I want to try to reline it in .30 or .32 cal.

13/16's 50? I know that a 7/8's 50 is about the thinnest 50 on the market, but is there such a creature as a 13/16's 50?

Yep!  Don Getz cut one for me years ago and I am still shooting it.  I think he did a number of them for O/U wenders etc.

Barrel was made for Navy Arms by Davide Pedersoli.  I. too, was surprised to see a .50 in 13/16".  Here is a link to my discussion on it:

I don't see a problem with relining it.  If it has a patent breech you would either have to replace the breech or go no smaller bore than the chamber.  Bobby did a 25-20 for me and it shoots great.

It is a sidehammer with a hook breech.  No powder chamber in the plug.  I want to reline the current .50 cal to a smaller .30 or .32 cal., which I am hoping will be a fairly straight forward job for Mr Hoyt.
