I call it a "masterpiece" because it was submitted to the Custom Gunmaker's Guild in Reno NV for membership in that guild by yours truly. The membership committee voted unanimously to accept my application based on this rifle and the references that I provided. I've had a number of requests to post some pics. of the project and I've just mastered the skill of posting pics. on this forum so here goes!

Whew that piece of art makes we peons feel humble for certain. I'd sure hate to drop that lady out my tree stand.......fine and beautiful!

One further item to mention regarding the "masterpiece rifle" is that the total number of bench hrs. added up to 6,000!--3,000 for the gun and 3,000 for the case and accessories. This project did not happen over a two week period!! In actual fact the rifle alone took 3 yrs. of bench time working fulltime 11 months per yr.

Crow killer, You asked about the half sole on the frizzen. It was made from a piece of old file. First it is annealed then it it is shaped to fit the frizzen. Next you heat treat the halfsole to harden and draw the temper. Then polish the backside of the halfsole and the face of the frizzen. Next sweat solder the sole to the frizzen with "low temp" silver solder. This will not over heat the halfsole so as to ruin the hardness and wala there's your halfsoled frizzen! Hi Tom, Thanks for the compliment. The truth is that the more I get involved with my gunmaking efforts the more I realize how much more I have yet to learn. However what I have learned I am only too willing to pass on to the serious student. Also there some things that I've learned which are "shop"secrets. These I will also pass on but you have to come to my shop to gain them.

i have absolutely no secrets regarding building these wonderful rifles. take a page from jerry huddleston's book, hugh. he shares it all.

Crow Killer, just one word of caution on using "low temp" silver solder, while it has double the tensile strength of ordinary soft solder, it melts at 450 degrees. So after you solder your frizzen you cannot subject it to heat greater than that for fear of destroying the soldered joint. Hugh Toenjes
