First Build
« on: September 19, 2016, 02:22:53 AM »
Once again my love of history got the better of me, but at least this time I'm not lost in the woods on the Shiloh Battlefield. I hadn't really done any major projects since high school shop, 20 years ago, but a book on local history mentioned early gun production and one thing led to another.  It's got some mistakes, I'm already working on a new patch box lid, but all in all I'm happy with it. Chamber's Issac Haines, .54 cal, ready just in time for the October muzzleloader hunt.

Hi J karl, your first build looks good. You have quality parts and looks like you did a lot of things right when you put it together. Your incise carving looks pretty clean too. Good luck on the hunt.

Very nice for your first effort. Way better than the first two rifles I built. Keep up the good work!

Looks really nice to me for a first build, my first is not near as well done.

I have a TOW Issac Hanes kit waiting in the wings for my next build.

Unless you are already a flintlock shooter you are going to need some significant range time to be ready for hunting season.  Building the gun is great and so is learning to manage your flintlock safely and with accuracy.  Find an experienced mentor in your area if you can.

You've built yourself a fine rifle, J.Karl. Nice wood and I really like the color.  Care to share what you used to stain it?

What Jerry V Lape said is good advice.

I hunted with a flintlock when I was younger.  Ive been using a percussion TC renegade for the last few years but always wanted to get back into flintlocks. If I start having issues there is a local shop that I'm sure would be more than happy to help me out. If it's not ready for deer season I know the old Renegade is. That's good advice and I think I'll take the TC along to the range so I have a fall back plan.

I used the Chambers finishing kit. One coat of LMF nut brown stain followed by chambers oil till I was happy. I think I got four or five coats on. I was starting to loose the hologram effect in the maple and was happy with the color so I decided to stop.

Once you shoot this rifle you will never go back to your old TC Renegade.  Just get out and shoot it until it feels like it is part of you.  Get to know it.  Try several loads and types of patches to see what she likes.  If you followed Jim's directions drilling and placing your touch hole liner in this rifle has real fast ignition.  Keep your flint sharp and your powder dry,  Have fun.
