Chunk gun/ Target gun Barrels
« on: September 23, 2016, 01:07:11 AM »
Hi All, I've been thinking of making a chunk gun/ target gun for some time. The biggest barrels I've found are offered by Rice, but only to 1 3/8 ATF. I'd like something closer to 2" ATF or bigger x 42ish inches. .50 cal or better. Would prefer a fast twist but also need a round ball gun for March in Pall Mall. Anyone know where to find such barrels, (without waiting a year). Thanks for you're input, Mike

Do you really feel like you need that big a barrel?  I used the same barrel used by a multiple winner.   It is a custom Getz 1 1/8" x 46" in 45 caliber.   I think it is plenty heavy.   Remember you have to get up and down with that thing.   A barrel the size you are talking about is more bench rest class weighing in at 50 or 60 lbs or more.

Mark, Maybe its nostalgia, but I like the looks of the period (1850-1860) Northeastern Target guns. The guns the try outs for Burdans sharp shooters would have brought with them. It's more the estetics (with function) than any practicality. Figured I'd give "period correct" a try.

My chuck gun has a 1 1 /4" Oct. barrel, 54" long. It weighs 23# and I wouldn't want any more weight to deal with at an over the log shoot.

When shot from a bench rest with a peep sight, it is capable of 10x one hole groups. I can't see a heavier barrel doing any better. I certainly couldn't shoot as good as the rifle can with open rear sights, and a legal chunk set up.

I used to shoot a 2 1/4 diameter goodiien barrel with sealed ignition under hammer
I think it weighed around 40-50 llbs
After a couple years I had 4 herniated discs in my back I sold the rifle
Now I shoot a 45 cal swamped green mountain deckert style bench rest I shoot just as good of groups
As with the heavy rifle a lot more fun and no pain the rifle weighs 8 lbs
Heavy goes not make a rifle accurate
IMHO

I always wondered who built all the oddball orphans you see on the back row at most muzzleloading shops. Question answered.

Have you thought about using a piece of stress relieved, seamless heavy wall steel tube and epoxy a 1" round barrel as a liner?

Several custom barrel makers could make a liner to fit the tube. I've seen 2" od x 1" Id seamless tube online for sale. All the extra diameter is only for extra weight anyway.

You would need direct ignition for a barrel that large or it would take all day to go off.

Folks, its not about performance, or weight, or sensiblity. Why do you copy a Lancaster or a Southern Mountain gun? Because you like it! Not that one is better or prettier but because you like it. When I said "I thank you for your input", I should have been more specific. I should have said "I thank you for your input if it leads me to finding a big fat unneccisarily heavy and far too long rifle barrel as found on many pre civil war target rifles". I don't reallt want to debate, I'm just looking for a specific barrel type.

Have you checked with Rayal or Burton or any of the other custom makers?

I wasn't being argumentative, Squirel. I don't know of anyone making 2" target barrels. Lining a 2" tube might be your best option.

No one is going to have a monster like that in stock. You might have Burton or Hoyt make you one. Or, maybe by a freak chance if you posted a WTB add here you might find somebody who has one to sell.

Custom is gonna be the only way to go, as for wait time......well you may not have an option.  The traditional muzzleloading barrel makers likely do not start out with that large of material for making their barrels, so you might need to check with barrel makers of the modern kind, especially those that supply military.  I know Badger Barrel in Bristol, Wi. Would make you anything, you might have to drill and thread your breach end (or pay and give specs to what you want there).  They can drill a hole through any dia. Material and just leave in the the rough.  I've seen how large diameter they start out with to make 50cal machine gun barrels since they machine the compensators, they are not the screw on type, they are permanent.  But, you will wait, these guys don't stop production orders for a one off barrel order.  You might get lucky and they have something that could work for you too.  Also remember, only a large lathe will be able to handle such a barrel, a lot can not pass a 2" barrel thru headstock, think about that if you have to breech such a barrel.  Good luck on your search.

No Smylee I haven't, I'm unfamiliar with Rayal and Burton but will look into it and thanks.
Okawbow I didn't take it as arguementative, sorry if I came across that way. 9 out of 10 rifle barrels I have are Douglas. All shapes and sizes. I'd be hard put to say which shot best. I know I don't NEED a hugh Mongo barrel, I just want one.

If Charlie will make it, I'd jump on that and get all the other particulars sorted in the meanwhile.

Try Oregon barrels through The Gun Works, they make 2 bore barrels. I would think a 2 bore would have to pretty big ATF's.

44" 50 cal 1 1/4 across the flats will make a rifle near 18 pounds with good wood and a wide buttplate and it does not have to look so clunky. 2" barrel is not needed.

Accuracy will not be an issue if you have a quality barrel.

well i am in your camp. i think it would be a interesting build, and if done correctly and nicely would be a neat piece to have. fitted it out with proper the architecture ie. sights, false muzzle etc. it would be a worthy piece. don't worry about the nay sayers. i still crave a 1 inch flint wall gun!

I haven't seen a lot of chunk guns but I don't think I have ever seen one with a false muzzle.

False muzzles are specifically not allowed in any of the chunk gun matches that I am aware of.
