Need a source for #3 x 1/8" slotted flat head screws
« on: October 17, 2016, 10:40:12 PM »
They are needed for the escutcheons on a plains rifle. I have on hand several #3's at one-eighth inch length, but not nearly enough. Where do you fellows purchase your tiny wood screws? Blacksmith Bolt does not carry them, TOW is not a source presently and MBS does not carry such an animal.

Point me in the direction of purchasing such a screw. Thank you.

I bought a handful from Tip Curtis at Dixon's in '07...nice screws.

Mine are 1/4" long.  I install them and if they protrude into the barrel channel, just file them off.  1/8" seems too short to me, especially when the escutcheon is about .040" to .062 thick.

I purchased a bunch from Dixion's some years ago -- not cheap - all steel not plated - give them a call. These are not easy to come by. You could use the # 2 or #3 X 3/8" size from Blacksmith Bolts and trim them back some if you can't find any of the 1/8" size - just a thought.

I would use pins for something that small,  or you could file down the screws from Blacksmith Bolt.   Remember that original wood screws had flat points.    If you want to use iron pins,  use black iron wire from Brownell's.   I have made a lot of pins out of that.

Guys, if you ever get truly high-centered for a specific bolt, you might try calling my sister Michelle at Patterson Hardware:  805/524-0476.

She's now running the family hardware store, which first opened in 1919.  Pop took it over when Grandpa died in 1958, and increased/filled-in bolt stocks until he finally passed a couple years ago.  Last I visited, they were carrying bolts from #1X 1/8" to 1" X 12", in both NC and NF threads, and in several heads and finishes.

They also have a pretty complete stock of soft-iron rivets, should that little issue ever arise for you, and she does take (debit and credit card) orders by phone.

And yes:  as you can imagine, doing a complete, actual-count inventory has been a nightmare experience, as long as I can remember.   ;)

Call Dixion's I was there on Friday and purchased some #2 X 1/8" steel screws for $4.50 for a pack - did not count the screws but it looked liked 12 in a pack. I also saw #3's next to the #2's.
