Nice figured wood and overall finish! Is the finish iron nitrate with permalyn on the wood and brass antique on the metal?

I swore some time ago that I'd not build another gun from a kit, but so many other folks have built these really nice looking guns that I gave in. Besides, Southern rifles and good bourbon are weaknesses of mine. I generally use iron nitrate for the stain, but this time I used Curly Nut Brown from Muzzleloader Builders Supply put on heavy and rubbed back. The finish is what I use almost all the time now, Chambers' Traditional Oil Finish. The patina is from brass antique solution applied to the steel as you guessed. The gun Jim based his kit on was made by a NC gun maker named Whitson, Appalachian School as I recall, but my memory is about a sharp as a pound of wet leather. It is shown in Jim Ivey's book. Unfortunately my copy is in my work shop at the moment or I could give you some more information. But without looking it up, I'd make a guess that it would be in the 1820's or 1830's period. That however is just a guess; others here on the forum could give you a more knowledgeable idea of the time period of this gun.

Mole Eyes that is a fine looking firearm, well done sir. Love that finish, wood and metal, and the minimal carving details you included. It has SMR written all over it.

I had admired that NC rifle from when I first viewed in one of the books I own (forget which). Jim has done a wonderful job producing and offering this kit gunne. I believe he has a hit on his hands - good for you Jim.

Thanks, Dave. I wanted to make the gun with as many of the characteristics of the original as I could. So I found a smaller sized patch box from Muzzleloader Builders' Supply that is nearly a dead ringer for the one in the picture of the original. Since the toe plate isn't visible in the picture in Ivey's book, I cut it from some sheet steel to be typical of one from that style of rifle. I've seen similar incise carving on other NC rifles, so I did the same on mine. Glad you liked it and I agree that Jim Kibler has a winner here.

One of the guys in my BP club has never attempted to build a gun before and got one of Jim's kits. With a little oversight and encouragement he did a great job. For someone that has no or very little experience in gun building, I recommend they take a long look at Jim's kit as a first serious project. For experienced builders, it's a fun little project.

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately I only just put about a dozen shots through it while it sighting it in. One of the members of my gun club just had to have that rifle and kept waiving lots of money in front of me my eyes until I sold it to him. It is now a wall hanger in his house.

My time in the shop is now limited because of being the sole caregiver to my wife who is undergoing a long recovery from a severe back injury. But I'm slowly working on a Gillespie rifle. I just really like those Southern rifles.
