Building a Norwegian Style Box Barrel Flintlock Rifle

Hi Guys!
Back to a litle gunbuilding, starting swamping and taper the box on my Charles Burton made barrel, rifled on my Iowa Bench see herehttp://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=30643.0
Use my old mill, and cleane up with a good big mill file ;)Next will be to file ornaments? in front of the square and mill stripes we see.

Runastav:  Nice to see you into a new project.

I really like those auto body files for removing steel fast from a barrel.  Some folks call them "Vixen" files...suppose that might be a brand name?  But they cut fast and leave a nice smooth surface.

Taylor calls his 'body file' "JAWS".  It actually takes off curls of steel - I have one as well, however I lack the requisite skill required to use it to good effect.

I think Vixen was a name. I have one in good condition that's bigger than this one.

Agreed ,when used for shaping barrels , a Vixen with that aggressive cutting tooth will remove furious amounts of metal.
That file, 6 hours and I have turned a round barrel, octagon. A good work out. :P

If you google the Norwegian word  ( KASSEPIPE )  there is some photos of Box barrels Rifles :)

Yes - Runar - 30 to 40 years is about right! My first was in 1976 or 77 WOW- 39 and 40 years!  I do remember having blistered and bloody hands.  No handles on the files, except for duct-tape wraps. LOL - I still have one of those 'rasps' with some brown stained duct tape.

This is quite a project - well done.

You bet, my hands end up sore but doable!


I still have some of the big half round Multicut files left.These have 11 inches of sharp teeth
on the flat side and are 1-1/8" wide and have a good tang for a comfortable handle.
These are AMERICAN made,new old stock and are $40 each to any U.S address which includes
USPS and shipped in a reusable mailing tube. IF you can't organize your life without making a
round barrel into square or octagon then these files will help. Used as a draw file with light pressure
and a good threading fluid or cutting oil they will take a lot of effort out of draw filing a tough steel barrel.

This build will not be a copy of any original, but I will use several as inspirasjon. Most originals was either snaplock and flintlocks, but most is rebuild to percussion. Here is some more filings  :)

Incredible project. The architectural design of Norwegian firearms seem so different to me. Almost alien ( rectangle to swamped barrel). But also most interesting. Watching and learning as I always do when you start a project.

Hi all, and thank you!
Some more filing and this barrel type have always some stripes in lenght think the old guys chisel them out but I do it simpel and use my handy dandy carbide wheel in the drill. as a gaid use a old big sawblade ;)
