All you VA and surrounding area gunbuilders
« on: October 23, 2016, 02:44:44 PM »
For those VA and surrounding area gunbuilders that complain that they never are able to see original rifles be sure to attend this upcoming show http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=41801.0

Remember that this show is not open to the general public but if you belong to any of the listed organizations you are invited and need only to show up with membership ID. For those of you that do not belong please contact Tim Hodges and tell him you are an ALR member and have interest in studying original rifles and would like to attend and would like to be added to his mailing list. This is a great show, lots of originals on display and a few contemporary items as well. Well worth a long drive to see.

I will not be able to attend this year due to back surgery and will miss going.

Allow me to chime in with Don and wish you a very successful surgery Dennis. I went through back surgery (L4 & L5 fused) in July of 2015, these days the success rate is very very high, and the relief obtained is out of this world compared to living with pinched nerves and such.

I'll tell you going in to expect a fairly long recovery period, in my case over a year. Do what your surgeon recommends during your recovery, they know what they're about.

I would love to attend that show but doing so is simply not in the cards this year.

Best wishes, Dennis! Went through fusion L4 and 5 in 1999 - or 98 - don't remember - pretty fuzzy with the morphine. If legal in your area, Laratin or Laratine is and was MUCH better pain reliever and was not addictive for me. I was up to 3 miles a day, walking with my wife. This med was taken off the shelf in Canada. Too bad - that is when my major pain started. Morphine only makes things and memory fuzzy - it was not a good pain reliever for me although I was on it for 12 years. All the best in your recovery, Dennis. I surely hope this is less of a chore, for you.
The alternative, is not worth it. If you need it, you NEED it.  It is better NOW, than before surgery, that is for sure.

I hope good wishes from WEST Virginia count as well. The medical people now have a LOT more know how today
than they did years ago and if you do as they say post op then you'll be back to what you love and like in due time.

Thanks guys, appreciate the kind words. Mine was due to Spinal Stenosis caused by bone spurs and arthritis. He cleaned all the junk out of L2,L3,L4,L5, didn't need any additional hardware or fusion. He said there were more that needed attention but he thought these would take care of my problems. All the hip/down the leg pain/weakness seems to have been taken care of. The pain now is from the incision and muscles that had to be cut. The pain is not horrible just very uncomfortable and constant. Having to wear the back brace all the time I am up causes its own muscle pain. Now my legs/ankles are swelling so off I go this morning to test for blood clots. I don't think that's the cause but glad to find out for sure.

I can't stand to sit or stand for over a 1/2 hr at a time, so I am up and down all day. Can't drive for at least a month so I get my excitement for the day when my wife drives me to Dr appointments ;D

Sounds good Dennis, glad you're on the way to recovery and a life sans chronic pain. Now all you have to do is resist joining in that sack race with the grandkids, lifting those bar bells and climbing telephone poles. Easy.

I had a friend who was blown up in VietNam while serving with the USMC that used to say
"The pain of lost love, fortune and friendship can be dealt with but the pain of pain is another
thing altogether". He had a million dollar wife that stayed with him the rest of his life which was 37 years
after being injured and after bring in constant pain for the last 5 years,he got in his shower, put a 44 Magnum in
his mouth and ended the whole thing. His widow remarried after two years and she is now dead from pancreatic
cancer.

Best of luck in the recovery.  Been there 3 times for disc surgery.   The surgical techniques have definitely improved, especially some of the minimally invasive approaches if they are indicated.   A surgical assistant once asked me if it's true that before you need surgery you would never let anybody touch your back with a knife but when you really need it you will beg for it.....    we all make different choices if the pain is debilitating and we can't do the things we enjoy.     Hang in there!!!!    Bruce Johnston. To anyone attending the 32nd Annual Virginia - Kentucky rifle show, the Kentucky Rifle Foundation will be sponsoring a display of rifles made in Hampshire County, WV. The display will feature gunsmiths like Frederick Sheetz, George Glaze, William Britton, Jacob Sheetz, etc. This will also be a good time to pick up one of newest CD's, namely the "Rifles of the Upper Bucks County Style" which features twenty Bucks County rifles by the likes of Shuler, Weiker, and Verner and a few other unknown ones. Our other CD is " West Virginia Gunsmiths" from our display of rifles featured at Pricketts Fort State Park. Stop and visit our table.
