First build

Well I thought long and hard about whether or not to get involved with building a flintlock. Pretty fair commitment of both time and money. In my case, especially time because I'll  need  to buy the parts piecemeal.
Regardless, I decided that "God hates a coward" so its on, even if only incrementally. .
Ordered a barrel just a few minutes ago. .36 caliber, 44" swamped Colerain.
Stock and lock and the rest to follow whenever I can.

You started right with a quality barrel.  Buy quality parts as you can and you won't be sorry.  Good luck on your journey.

Glad you started, you will be rewarded when you finish.  I started on a scrach shotgun, single barrel from pieces I picked up here and there, finished it and it worked   :)  Then went on to rifles.  I like to start with a stock that has the barrel inletted and ramrod drilled, two jobs that take a lot of time or realy long drills.  I also use the best! wood I can buy and I stay away from elec. tools (they cut to fast).  Most (all?) of my tools were found at yard sales, needle files, rasps, sandpaper, chisels both small and large, it cut the cost.  Post pic as you move along.  steg49

Go on you for starting.  Remember that you can also put "Want to Buy" ads in the classified section if you get to a spot where you want the next 'piece of the puzzle'.  Lots of guys have extras, spares or parts they may never get to use, so asking is always allowed ;)

It's going to be time consuming with valleys of despair, and peaks of delight and enlightenment. It is so worth it in the end. If I was you, buy the stock next. Inlet the barrel  by hand while you save for the lock. That's how I had to do it. Good luck, and ask many questions. Everyone here is helpful and willing to share.

This advice is all much appreciated.
I have pretty much ditched the idea of an ash stock While the stated difficulty working with it is a concern, it is also true that, having to buy a blank and have the stock carved and barrel inlet would add about $200 to the gun. Frankly I don't want an ash stock that badly. My .50 is stocked in curly maple, my .54 Walnut so I'm thinking cherry. I'd like a different wood than what I have, but I'm always open to suggestion.
I figure to have the barrel channel cut/ramrod hole drilled for me.
Barrel came today, the "Brown Truck of Happiness" rolled in here about 2PM.
Stock is next.

Cherry will work. It is easier than ash for sure. You might consider cutting your barrel channel and drilling your ramrod hole yourself, it is good experience to have under your belt. Nothing at all wrong with having it done for you though.
