Best white lightning size opinions wanted
« on: November 14, 2016, 05:29:12 AM »
Building an Isaac Haines .54 cal.  38” rifle with a swamped Rice barrel. My 2nd rifle. At breech end, the barrel measures 1.062 from flat to opposite flat. Width of the flat at the touch hole location is .450. Which is the better choice and why – the 1/4 x 32 or the 5/16 x 32 or the 3/8 x 32 white lightning liner. Or doesn't it matter?

The flash hole is the same on all of them.

Go with the smallest that way if someone buggers the threads they can drill and tap for the next larger size.

My 2cents- I use the biggest one that will fit between the flats. I believe the larger cavity in the liner makes faster/better ignition. can't prove it though.

Formerly used the 5/16  dia.  but changed to the 1/4 dia. which has the advantage as said already of going to the next larger size if a screw up occurs. One other advantage is that the TH liner can be located higher on the bbl flat as w/ some  Lehighs or Bucks Countys......Fred

good points. I install in the center of the flat and install the lock to suit. I know I am possibly putting proper architecture second. I haven't messed up an installation YET. I have taken advantage of small touchhole holes to relocate the liner on repair jobs.

For what it's worth, here is the information from Jim Chambers' website on sizing the White Lightning liner to your barrel.

3/8" x 32 for 1 1/16" or larger barrels #THL-01
5/16" x 32 for 7/8" & 1" barrels #THL-02
1/4" x 32 for 7/8" and smaller barrels #THL-03
