Accoutrement for the 18th Century Gentlemens Pouch/Pocket
« on: November 15, 2016, 04:19:06 AM »
This is a copy of an 18th Century English Cowrie shell/silver snuff box.Snuff was hugely popular and these show up from the late 17th century through the 18th Century and into the early 19th Century. There are numerous extant examples. This one is based on a late 18th Century example.

It is a beautifully crafted copy of a turtle shell snuff box.

Look again, no turtles were harmed in the making of this snuff box.

That looks very much like one passed down through my mother's family. I believe it was her great grandmother's. A cowrie shell with a silver side and lid, except that the hinge was 90 degrees to the way this one is, and more oval.

A gorgeous piece of work, sir.

Here's that old family snuffbox for comparison. Mr. Yates' snuffbox is much higher quality, actually.
