disinfectant wipes for cleaning BP

My son and I spent the afternoon shooting and a buddy told me to try using the disinfectant wipes for cleaning the rifles.

It works like nothing I have tried in the 28 years I have been shooting BP.  It made the clean up about as simple as it could be.

I simply torn one in 4 pieces and the bore cleaned right up.

Not sure about that.

there are several brands that they sell.  In a round container that say disinfectant wipes.

I used clorox brand, my buddy used lysol.

I ended up going to the store tonight and bought 2 more containers for myself and put the ones I took from  the wife back.

There is only one store on the frontier!     I remember they had these wipes out where the shopping carts were during the flu season. Never used them and didn't pay attention to what brand they were. They might be an item I would want to take on a pack in hunting trip or some such.

I have used windex on my last patches to get the last little bit
cleaned out. I have found it to work great. I will try the disinfectant
wipes as I have to give my 50 cal a good cleaning.

Are we talking about disinfectant wipes? Do they contain clorine bleach. Is bleach an oxidizer? Isn't iron oxide called rust? What rust preventative are you using to follow up? Do I sound skeptical?

It could be nothing more than alcohol and an emollient/moisturizer ... So your hands don't dry-out and crack.

Good question.  I looked at the MSDS for both Clorox and Lysol Brands.   Both contain isopropyl or ethyl alcohol, plus benzyl ammonium chloride (a bactericidal chemical present in very small quantities).  Neither one lists chlorine as an ingredient.  Nothing here that will hurt a gun barrel.

They very likely contain an emollient as well.  I think Smoketown got it exactly right.

If you want a fast clean up after skinning game, just use a bit of hydrogen peroxide. Clean hands in an instant.

I don't know anything about babies.  I just used "disinfectant wipes msds" as the search term.  I suppose you could use them on babies, but why anybody would want to run an ramrod through a baby is beyond me.  I think they're usually automatically self cleaning.

Caution! All joking aside. Disinfectant wipes and "baby wipes," are NOT remotely similar.
Do NOT use disinfectant wipes to clean your skin!
I work in a busy critical care unit and recently had a patient who was using Lysol wipes for personal hygiene. His skin was sluffing off in a very disturbing manner, including in some very personal areas.

I'm sure either will clean a gun just fine, it really doesn't take much, but Lysol and clorox wipes aren't for skin.

But beware of  any ingredient based on ammonium chloride.  Also known as salamoniac.  Used it to quickly brown ml barrels.  The ammonia tied to the chloride makes the corrosion go very fast.  A 5% solution of ammonium chloride swabbed onto the barrel.  Fours hours in a damp corner of the basement would give a heavy coat of granular rust.

I dont know if they promote rust or not.  My first time using them.  I got two buddys using them I think for over a year.  Neither have complained about rust yet.

At this point all I know is that I have found nothing that cleans as well.

That small of an amount should do no harm

I've used Clorox wipes and baby wipes on the outside surfaces and locks. Never had any rust form. I've never tried them to clean he bore though.

I have tried to brown steel with sal ammoniac.  It is a very slow way to brown a barrel even in high concentrations, and I would not have the least concern about using wipes with 0.184% for cleaning a barrel.

I use the the hand wipes sold at CVS, each one cut into four squares, to get the bulk of the fouling out of my barrels. The wipes are just a non-woven fiber soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Works especially well in smooth bores. Once most of the crude is removed by the hand wipes, I switch to Ballistol and WD40 for the final cleaning.

I bought a package of baby wipes a couple days ago but haven't used one yet.  Couldn't find any "Lysol" or "Clorox" wipes at the store I shop at.  I'll keep looking but at another store.
