Sights For A Bare Bones Barn Gun or Schimmel
« on: December 09, 2016, 09:49:43 PM »
What sights could be used on a severely plain gun, just lock stock and barrel? I've read that some guns on display at Dixon's Gun Fair have the top barrel flat upset with a cold chisel and filed to shape, what else could be done? I'm looking for something different than run of the mill sights, Me using a chisel on a barrel sounds like a disaster weighting to happen! Any help would be appreciated, Pictures would be helpful as well. Thanks   ghost

I've used a small piece of angle iron to make the rear sight, but the barrel had to be dove tailed.
Or, depending on the your tang screw, I've used the notch on the screw for a rear sight on a pistol.
Just ideas...

Well, you could silver solder a small piece of steel to the top of the breech-plug just behind the barrel and file a notch into it. If you really didn't want to solder you could even drill and tap a hole in the same spot and screw a screw or threaded piece of steel in and then file a notch in the top of that.
Is there no trigger guard on this piece? That would not be something that I would do without. (And yes, I know about the Scottish, Caucasian and Near Eastern guns made without them.)
Here's a barn idea, instead of ramrod thimbles, how about just a couple of iron staples to hold the ramrod? that would be easy and severely plain.
What shape of stock are you going to use? I hope you will post pics of the finished project.

 Chiseled sights.... >:(

That was stuff they did to abused old trade guns. Sights are a simple component that differs little whether it be on a Golden Age Beck or a very plain mountain rifle.

The "dirt poor" stuff only goes so far. Put some proper sights on that rifle.

Even if the rifle is simple....dang it! ;D  They would have sights on it as good as any...if not whats the point?
