Rear sight placement

Rear sight placement. Forged and filed out rear sight for current build. Well it's time to cut dovetails and I am struggling with how far forward to place rear sight. Behind balance point (where my hand would be to carry it) it is a little fuzzy. Ahead of balance point the focus is better but it is over 15 inches from breach. This is a four foot long barrel. Looks odd to me that far forward. What to do?

Ahead of the balance point.  Your eyes will thank you as you age.

Well I don't feel so lonesome now. I will put it forward. I was going to use a store bought front sight but I don't like any I have so I will make one. Any one ever do bone blade?

I usually file the notch a few thousands wider than the blade for a better sight picture.

Ditch the rear sight....mount a small peep on the tang just behind the barrel...
Easy to carry..sight out of the way...... plus your gain 15 inch sight radius
and you can shoot this sight till your 100.
3 bucks in material.

The peep would be nice, but they are illegal in our local matches.

On the few rifles I have made,the rear sight was the last thing I installed.
I move it along the barrel until it's clear and sharp to ME and then mark
the barrel and mill the dovetail.I used a folding tang sight on the long range
.451 I built in 2003. I made it as well with a 40 thread per inch elevating screw
and used a 17A Lyman with a level in the base and windage adjustment plus
Lee Shaver's inserts.

  Me too. just ahead of your hand when carrying. I built just one gun with it further back for a YOUNG man. He said he preferred it there. On my guns I file the rear sight notch wide enough to APPEAR twice the width of the front sight when sighting. This leaves plenty of light showing on each side of the front sight. Although a wider sight notch seems less precise, I actually shoot better with it.

Well here be the sights. I finally got them filed out. Front silver blade from old morgan dollar with bronze base. Rear forged from wrought iron. Now to cut them in.
