How to determine length of a horn strap
« on: December 30, 2016, 03:22:42 PM »
I'm having a strap made for a double horn and I don't know how long to have it  made.  The horn I'm using right now is a cheapy that I put a leather lace on and I just deal with the length.  I just don't know how or where the horn should hang to work the best.

Have you considered putting a billet and buckle on the side of the strap that sits on your back?

I would think that as with which side to carry it on it is a personal setting. Try attaching a strap to the finial and clipping the strap at the neck, that way you can move it higher or lower until you get the feel you want.

This will be a woven strap.  I think I have to have a fairly close idea of length, or is there a way to adjust a woven strap?

The most effective way I have finished a woven strap was to take a piece of  suede or any thin leather.  I shape it sort of like an elongated football, doubling it to make sure the rounded ends are matched.  I use a tacky glue to fold the leather over the end of the strap for about an inch.  It can be straight and the width of the strap, once in a while I like to put a bulge in for aesthetics, whatever... If the ends are loose or frayed, some Bordens will seal them.

Sometimes I'd work in a D ring, sometimes I work it so that the  fold of the leather is about a 1/4 inch longer than the end of the strap for a lace to pass through, sometimes I put on a buckle...it's up to your taste at the moment.

Then I use an awl...NOT a hole puncher that will cut into the fabric... and punch out a stitching design such as a weeping heart, or a flat seam that runs along the edge of the leather...whatever

Per above, a buckle is the best way to provide for adjustment, but the guys have provided some good advice in this thread otherwise.

Play with the length of your current leather lace until you get the horn where you want it. Measure lace, allow for attachment.

Use your basic thong set up to establish your basic minimum length with hunting clothes on. I strongly suggest you specify a buckle and strap arrangement for adjustability added to your woven strap. Have the holes in you strap spaced so that you have a couple holes available to shorten your strap from this length and a  four or five holes to increase its length. Be sure you have figured how your going to attach the strap to the horn and allow for that. It's better to have a bit more adjustment than you need. You can always shorten the adjustment strap end. Use a cloth tape measure to measure from your natural waist line at your back edge of your side, over your shoulder and to the front edge of your side. That is where your bag should sit, the horn may sit 2-4 inches lower or higher if you wish.
