My first horn almost finished
« on: January 05, 2017, 03:57:40 AM »
Here is a quick picture of my first powder horn

I was a great learning experience and I have a long way to go. There are some things I will do different next time, and hopefully I will improve
I have a greater appreciation for the master horners
Any comments and advise is greatly appreciated

Doug ,
Horn looks great to me. The spout looks great! I'm still working on my first, and it is not as nice as yours.

That base plug must have been a BEAR to fit. Horn look very good.

It wasn't too bad actually. I traced the pattern on a scrape piece of white pine and then rasped it down to get it close, and then sanded it.
Then I heated the base end of the horn with a heat gun (if you look at the top pic you can see I scorched it a bit) until it was plyable enough to squeeze it in.
I will try to boil it the next time to shape the end but I saw that you could use a heat gun so I thought I would give it a try.
That is one thing that I would do differently like i said earlier, or just be much more careful and pay attention so that it does not scortch again.
I think if I had wanted to put in a round base plug then the heat gun would not have worked, but since I was using the shape of the horn instead that is did.

Doug,  Just so you know...you can scorch the horn when boiling it in lard too.  I boil mine in lard to round them, but when it comes time to fit the base plug, I heat the horn up using a heat gun and only heating the inside of the horn.  Once it's hot enough, I pop the base plug in and let it cool.  So far I haven't scorched the outside of the horn once using this method.

Just my $.02

Thank you for the advice! I never considered heating it from the inside, good to know.
Thanks again
