Canteen
« on: January 08, 2017, 06:30:32 AM »

I got this really nice copper canteen for Christmas, (Westminster Forge). Just finished making a strap and carrier for it out of some scrap blanket wool and linen cloth. I sewed it up with linen thread and whittled stopper out of buckeye. What ya think?

Sweet, David. What are you going to carry in there, if I can ask? Happy New Year

I hope they used lead free solder.

I let my gourd seed run out. They hold up pretty good till you fall on it. I had a tin one that rusted out from the inside. Maybe the copper will last longer.

Not really a 'tin' canteen but 'tinplate' the same material as 'tin cans'.   ;)

I was told that water is 'sweeter' when stored in a copper vessel.      8)

It's also SUPPOSED to be good for you.  ::)

I lined my gourds with beeswax and the water really did taste sweet out of them.

Copper is antimicrobial and kills a variety of microbes fairly rapidly.

I've had one of Westminster Forges canteens for over 20 years and I've been in Tom Browns shop where he makes them. They are not recommended for alcoholic or high acid (cider) liquids. They are not tinned and are soldered with food safe non lead material.
I have a fairly full set of his camp pots (2 gallon thru 1 pint and a 5 gallon cistern) all hand made by one craftsman- Tom B.
PS  Dave I like the strap and sleeve.
